Explanation of the Verse:
Allah, the Most High, informs His noble Prophet ﷺ — and through him, the entire Muslim nation — that the worship performed in the depths of the night, when one rises from sleep to stand before his Lord, holds a unique and unparalleled virtue. This night worship is described as being *"more severe in impact"* — meaning it is heavier upon the body and more demanding on the soul, yet precisely because of that weight, it leaves a deeper and more lasting impression upon the heart. The stillness of the night, the absence of worldly distractions, and the quieting of voices all combine to make the heart more present, more humble, and more connected to the words being recited.
Furthermore, this worship is *"more upright in speech"* — meaning the recitation of the Qur'an and the supplications offered during the night are more accurate, more deliberate, and more aligned with truth. This is because the mind is clear, the heart is focused, and the tongue is free from the haste and heedlessness that often accompany daytime activities. The night prayer, therefore, becomes a means of training the soul, purifying the intention, and strengthening one's relationship with the Book of Allah.
This verse serves as a beautiful encouragement for every believer to cherish the night hours — those precious moments when the world sleeps and the servant stands alone with his Creator. It reminds us that the effort we invest in worship during these quiet hours is never wasted; rather, it is the most effective means of softening the heart, sharpening the tongue with the truth, and drawing closer to Allah with sincerity and devotion. Let every Muslim seize this opportunity, for the night is a treasure given to those who seek it, and its reward is immense both in this life and the Hereafter.
