Surah Al-Muzzammil — Verse 7

• Sabh (سَبْحًا): Literally means "swimming" or "moving about." Here, it refers to moving about, turning around, and being occupied with various tasks and affairs.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse addresses the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) directly, and through him, every believer who strives to balance the demands of daily life with the call to worship. Allah says: "Indeed, for you during the day is prolonged movement and much occupation."

During the daytime, your time is consumed with the affairs of life—earning a livelihood, tending to family, fulfilling the duties of your mission, and managing the countless responsibilities that come your way. Just as a swimmer moves through water, constantly in motion, turning this way and that, so too does the believer move through the day, pulled in many directions by the needs of the world.

This is not a criticism of that activity—it is a recognition of reality. The day is naturally a time of movement, work, and engagement with people and matters. But because the day is so filled with these distractions and preoccupations, the night becomes a precious gift, a sanctuary of stillness and silence where the soul can reconnect with its Creator without interruption.

Therefore, Allah instructs: since your day is consumed with worldly tasks, dedicate your night to worship, prayer, and the recitation of the Qur'an. The night is the time when distractions fade, when the noise of the world subsides, and when the heart can focus entirely on its Lord. This is a divine mercy—a wise division of time that allows the believer to fulfill both the rights of the world and the rights of the soul.

A Da'wah Reflection:

How beautiful is this divine guidance! Allah does not demand that you abandon your work or neglect your responsibilities. He knows that you must move through the day, striving and providing, serving and engaging. But He also knows that your soul has needs that the world cannot satisfy—needs for peace, for connection, for spiritual nourishment.

So He gives you the night as a gift—a quiet space where you can stand before Him in prayer, whisper your needs to Him, and let His words wash over your heart. This is not a burden; it is an invitation to balance. The day for the body, the night for the soul. The day for the creation, the night for the Creator.

If you find yourself overwhelmed by the "long swimming" of the day, remember that the night is waiting for you—a gentle harbor where you can rest in the presence of the Most Merciful. Even a few minutes of night prayer, even a few verses of Qur'an, can transform your entire being and give you the strength to face another day with peace and purpose.
