Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • سَأُرْهِقُهُ (Sa'urhiquhu): I will burden him, exhaust him, or overwhelm him with hardship.
  • صَعُودًا (Sa'udan): A steep, arduous ascent; a continuous and unbearable climb. It signifies a punishment that is perpetually difficult and never-ending.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse comes as a direct and severe warning from Allah to a specific person—identified in the context as al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah—who was a stubborn opponent of the truth and an enemy of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Despite being given abundant wealth, numerous children, and every comfort in life, he rejected the Qur'an and arrogantly opposed Allah's message.

In response to his ingratitude and defiance, Allah declares: "I will burden him with a crushing, unbearable hardship." The imagery of a steep, rugged climb (صَعُودًا) is powerful—it describes a punishment that is like being forced to ascend a treacherous mountain with no rest, no relief, and no end. Every step is agony, and the climb only grows harder. This is not merely physical torment but a profound spiritual and psychological suffering that encompasses the entire being of the one who rejects the truth.

This verse is not limited to that one man alone; it serves as a timeless principle. Anyone who knowingly turns away from Allah's guidance, mocks His revelations, and uses the blessings they were given to fight against the truth will face this same fate. The punishment fits the crime: just as they made the path of truth difficult for others and themselves, Allah will make their path to relief and salvation impossibly difficult.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on the mercy of Allah. He grants us wealth, health, family, and countless blessings—not as a sign of His approval alone, but as a test. Will we use these gifts to draw closer to Him, or will we use them to distance ourselves from Him? The one who receives everything yet remains ungrateful is in the most perilous state. But the door of repentance is always open. Do not be like those who harden their hearts until the punishment becomes unavoidable. Turn back to your Lord today, embrace the Qur'an, and let its light guide you. For the path of faith, though it may require effort, leads to eternal peace—while the path of arrogance leads only to an endless, exhausting climb with no summit in sight. Choose wisely, for your choice determines your eternity.
