Word Meanings:

  • Kallā (كَلَّا): Absolutely not! A strong Arabic expression of denial, rebuke, and rejection of a false notion or claim.
  • Āyātinā (لِآيَاتِنَا): Our signs — referring to the verses of the Qur’an and the divine proofs and evidences sent to humanity.
  • ʿAnīd (عَنِيدًا): Stubbornly obstinate, defiant, and antagonistic — one who knowingly rejects the truth and turns away from it in arrogance and hostility.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse is a direct and powerful rebuke from Allah to a specific man — al-Walīd ibn al-Mughīrah — who was one of the most stubborn opponents of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in Makkah. The verse begins with "Kallā" — a firm "No!" — shutting down the man’s arrogant expectation that Allah would give him even more wealth and children despite his outright rejection of the truth.

Allah then exposes the real reason why this man deserves no further favors: "Indeed, he was stubbornly defiant against Our signs." This means that al-Walīd was not someone who rejected the truth out of ignorance or confusion — rather, he knew the Qur’an was divine, he even admitted its eloquence surpassed human speech, yet he turned away in pride and hostility. He actively fought against the message, mocked it, and tried to discredit it among his people.

The word "ʿanīd" (stubbornly defiant) describes someone who is not merely a disbeliever, but an aggressive opponent of the truth — one who argues against it, blocks others from it, and persists in falsehood despite clear evidence. This is a severe spiritual disease: knowing the truth and rejecting it out of arrogance, tribal pride, or love of worldly status.

This verse carries a timeless lesson: Allah’s blessings in this world are not a sign of His pleasure with a person. A person may be given vast wealth, many children, and every comfort — yet be utterly despised by Allah because of their stubborn rejection of His guidance. Conversely, a believer may have little of this world but be beloved to Allah and honored in the Hereafter.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on your own heart: When the verses of Allah are recited to you, how do you respond? Do you welcome them with humility and a desire to understand? Or do you turn away, make excuses, or feel annoyed when the truth challenges your habits or desires?

The Qur’an is not a book to be debated or dismissed — it is a mercy, a light, and a guide to the straight path. The one who approaches it with sincerity will find peace, wisdom, and success in both worlds. But the one who approaches it with arrogance and stubbornness will only harm themselves.

Let this verse be a warning and a motivation: Never let pride, social pressure, or love of this world stand between you and the truth. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "None of you truly believes until his desires are subordinated to what I have brought." (Al-Bukhari in a related meaning)

So open your heart to the Qur’an today. Let it be your companion, your guide, and your intercessor on the Day when no wealth or children will avail anyone — except those who come to Allah with a pure and submissive heart. May Allah protect us all from stubbornness against His signs, and may He make us among those who listen to the word and follow the best of it. Ameen.
