Word Meanings:

  • ʿAbūs (عَبُوسًا): A day that makes faces frown and scowl due to its extreme terror and severity.
  • Qamṭarīr (قَمْطَرِيرًا): Extremely harsh, severe, and calamitous; a day of overwhelming distress that gathers all hardships together.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, the righteous servants of Allah declare: "Indeed, we fear from our Lord a Day that is frowning and severe." This is a day when the faces of the wicked will be distorted with anguish, their brows furrowed in dread, and their hearts seized with panic—because of the sheer magnitude of its horrors and the intensity of its terrors. It is a day so dire that even the mountains would crumble, and the skies would split asunder.

These believers, whom Allah praises in the preceding verses, were not merely performing acts of worship and charity out of habit or social expectation. Rather, their obedience was rooted in a profound consciousness of their Lord and a deep-seated fear of His judgment on that awesome Day. Their fear was not a paralyzing dread, but a reverent awe that drove them to action—to fulfill their vows, to feed the needy, the orphan, and the captive, and to do so purely for Allah's pleasure, seeking no reward or thanks from people.

This verse teaches us a beautiful lesson: true faith combines hope in Allah's mercy with fear of His justice. The believers did not say, "We are safe because we are righteous." Instead, they remained humble, acknowledging that their salvation rests entirely on Allah's grace. They understood that even their best deeds are insufficient without His mercy, and so they turned to Him with hearts full of both longing and caution.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, imagine that Day—the Day when every soul will stand before its Creator, and the accounts of a lifetime will be laid bare. The faces of the heedless will be darkened with sorrow, but the faces of the believers who feared Allah and lived accordingly will be radiant with joy. This verse invites you to build a relationship with your Lord that is alive—one that moves you to action, softens your heart, and fills your deeds with sincerity. Fear of that Day is not meant to crush you; it is a gift that awakens you from negligence and propels you toward the everlasting bliss of Paradise. Let this beautiful fear be your companion on the path to Allah, for it is the key that opens the doors of His mercy and the shield that protects you from the fire of regret.

📜 Verse 8-12 — Al-Insan

And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive,
[Saying], "We feed you only for the countenance of Allah. We wish not from you reward or gratitude.
Indeed, We fear from our Lord a Day austere and distressful."
So Allah will protect them from the evil of that Day and give them radiance and happiness
And will reward them for what they patiently endured [with] a garden [in Paradise] and silk [garments].
