Word Meanings:

  • Al-Tāmmah (الطَّامَّةُ): The overwhelming calamity or the all-encompassing disaster that covers everything with its terror. It is derived from the root meaning "to overwhelm" or "to cover over."
  • Al-Kubrā (الْكُبْرَىٰ): The Greatest, the Supreme, the most immense of all events.

Explanation of the Verse:

When the Greatest Overwhelming Calamity arrives — and that is the second blast of the Trumpet that ushers in the Day of Resurrection — every soul will be confronted with the full reality of its deeds. This is the supreme event that surpasses every hardship and horror this world has ever known. It is the moment when the heavens are split, the stars are scattered, and the earth is flattened. On that Day, all of creation will be gathered before its Lord, and every person will see with their own eyes the record of their actions — the good and the evil — laid bare before them. Hellfire will be brought forth in plain sight for all who can see, and nothing will remain hidden.

This is the Day that every human being must prepare for, for it is the ultimate reality that no one can escape. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) described this moment as one where even the closest of relatives will flee from one another, and every person will be consumed by their own concern. Yet for the believer who has lived in obedience to Allah, this Day will be one of joy and triumph, as they are welcomed into eternal bliss. For the heedless, it will be a Day of regret and loss.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and reflect: if you knew that a great trial was approaching — one that would determine your entire future — would you not prepare for it with utmost seriousness? The Tāmmah al-Kubrā is not a distant myth or a mere story; it is a certainty that will come upon every soul. The Qur'an repeatedly reminds us of this Day so that we may turn back to our Creator while we still have time. Today, the door of repentance is open, and the mercy of Allah is vast. Do not wait until the Trumpet is blown and it is too late. Return to your Lord with a sincere heart, perform the deeds He loves, and seek His forgiveness. For on that Day, the only thing that will benefit you is your faith and your righteous actions. Let this verse be a wake-up call — a gentle yet firm reminder that the Hereafter is nearer than you think, and that Allah's mercy is ready to embrace all who turn to Him before the Greatest Calamity arrives.

📜 Verse 32-36 — An-Nazi'at

32وَالْجِبَالَ أَرْسَاهَا
And the mountains He set firmly
33مَتَاعًا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَامِكُمْ
As provision for you and your grazing livestock.
34فَإِذَا جَاءَتِ الطَّامَّةُ الْكُبْرَىٰ
But when there comes the greatest Overwhelming Calamity -
35يَوْمَ يَتَذَكَّرُ الْإِنسَانُ مَا سَعَىٰ
The Day when man will remember that for which he strove,
36وَبُرِّزَتِ الْجَحِيمُ لِمَن يَرَىٰ
And Hellfire will be exposed for [all] those who see -
