Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Yasuddūna (يَصُدُّونَ): They prevent, hinder, or turn people away.
- Al-Masjid al-Ḥarām: The Sacred Mosque in Makkah, the holiest site in Islam.
- Awliyā’uhu (أَوْلِيَاءَهُ): Its guardians, protectors, or rightful caretakers.
- Al-Muttaqūn (الْمُتَّقُونَ): The God-fearing; those who are mindful of Allah by obeying His commands and avoiding His prohibitions.
The Interpretation:
How could the disbelievers of Makkah possibly escape Allah’s punishment when they were actively blocking the believers from reaching the Sacred Mosque—preventing them from performing the ṭawāf (circumambulation) around the Ka‘bah and praying within its sacred precincts? These were not merely acts of hostility; they were direct violations of the sanctity of the House of Allah and an open defiance of His command.
Moreover, the disbelievers falsely claimed to be the guardians and caretakers of the Sacred Mosque, using this as a pretext to justify their actions. But Allah refutes this claim decisively: they were never the rightful guardians of His House. The only true guardians of the Sacred Mosque are those who are mindful of Allah—those who fear Him in their hearts, fulfill His obligations, and abstain from what He has forbidden. It is these believers, not the arrogant polytheists, who hold the honor of serving and protecting the sanctity of the Ka‘bah.
Yet, most of the disbelievers do not understand this truth. Their ignorance leads them to claim a status they do not possess and to commit deeds that only hasten their own destruction. They think their worldly power and position will protect them, but they fail to realize that Allah’s justice is inevitable and His punishment is certain.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every soul: true honor and guardianship in the sight of Allah are not measured by lineage, wealth, or social standing, but by taqwā—consciousness of Allah and sincere obedience to Him. The Sacred Mosque, and indeed the entire religion of Islam, belongs to Allah alone. No one can claim authority over it except those whom Allah has honored with faith and righteousness.
So, dear reader, let this be a reminder to purify your heart and strengthen your connection with Allah. The gates of His mercy are wide open for those who turn to Him in sincerity. Do not be like those who were deceived by their own pride and ignorance. Instead, strive to be among the muttaqūn—those whom Allah Himself has described as the true guardians of His sacred symbols. For in the end, it is only the righteous who will find peace in this world and the next.
