Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Mukā'an (مُكَاءً): Whistling with the mouth.
  • Taṣdiyah (تَصْدِيَةً): Clapping of the hands, one against the other.

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah Almighty describes the state of the polytheists of Quraysh at the Sacred House (the Ka'bah), exposing the emptiness and mockery of their so-called "prayer." Their worship at the House was nothing but whistling and clapping — a display of arrogance and ridicule, not sincere devotion. They would stand around the Ka'bah, whistling through their mouths and clapping their hands, turning the sacred place of worship into a playground of vanity. This was their response to the call of truth, and their way of distracting others from the message of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Then comes the stern address: "So taste the punishment for what you used to disbelieve." This is a direct threat and a promise of divine retribution. The punishment referred to here is the humiliation of death and captivity that befell them at the Battle of Badr — a decisive moment when Allah humbled the arrogant and demonstrated that His promise to His believing servants is true.

The verse carries a profound lesson: worship that is devoid of sincerity and submission is worthless in the sight of Allah. The polytheists, despite their rituals at the Ka'bah, were not rewarded but punished, because their actions were rooted in disbelief and mockery. True worship is that which comes from a heart filled with faith, humility, and love for Allah — performed in accordance with His command and the guidance of His Messenger.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, ponder deeply upon this scene. The very House that Allah made a sanctuary of peace and guidance was being used by the disbelievers as a stage for mockery. Yet Allah, in His perfect justice, did not leave them unchecked. He responded with a punishment that served as a lesson for all times.

This teaches us the immense value of sincere worship. When you stand in prayer, remember that Allah looks not at your outward movements alone, but at the state of your heart. A prayer filled with humility and presence of heart elevates the believer, while a prayer performed in heedlessness loses its essence. Let us strive to make our worship a true connection with our Creator — a worship of love, awe, and gratitude — so that we may taste the sweetness of faith and be saved from the punishment that awaits those who mock the signs of Allah.

And know, dear reader, that the door of repentance is always open. The polytheists of old were punished for their disbelief, but whoever among them embraced Islam after that was forgiven and honored. Allah is Most Merciful, and He loves those who turn back to Him. Do not let your past mistakes define you; rather, let your present sincerity and future commitment to Allah be your greatest achievement.

📜 Verse 33-37 — Al-Anfal

But Allah would not punish them while you, [O Muhammad], are among them, and Allah would not punish them while they seek forgiveness.
But why should Allah not punish them while they obstruct [people] from al-Masjid al- Haram and they were not [fit to be] its guardians? Its [true] guardians are not but the righteous, but most of them do not know.
And their prayer at the House was not except whistling and handclapping. So taste the punishment for what you disbelieved.
Indeed, those who disbelieve spend their wealth to avert [people] from the way of Allah. So they will spend it; then it will be for them a [source of] regret; then they will be overcome. And those who have disbelieved - unto Hell they will be gathered.
[This is] so that Allah may distinguish the wicked from the good and place the wicked some of them upon others and heap them all together and put them into Hell. It is those who are the losers.
