Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- لِيُعَذِّبَهُمْ — to punish them with a destructive, sweeping punishment.
- وَأَنتَ فِيهِمْ — while you (O Muhammad) are present among them, living in their midst.
- يَسْتَغْفِرُونَ — they seek forgiveness from Allah for their sins.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah, in His infinite mercy and wisdom, declares that He would not send down a devastating, all-encompassing punishment upon the disbelievers of Makkah while you, O Muhammad, are living among them. Your very presence, O Messenger of Allah, is a shield of protection for them — a mercy that delays their account and gives them a final opportunity to reflect, repent, and return to the truth. Had you not been there, their persistent denial and hostility would have warranted their destruction, just as past nations were destroyed when they rejected their prophets.
Moreover, Allah adds a second layer of protection: He would not punish them while they are still seeking His forgiveness. Even if their repentance is not sincere or complete, the very act of asking for forgiveness — whether out of habit, remnants of faith, or a flicker of awareness — holds back the divine wrath. This demonstrates the immense value of *istighfar* (seeking forgiveness). It is a door that remains open, a rope that connects the servant to his Lord, and a means by which calamities are lifted and blessings are preserved.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: if the mere presence of a prophet or the utterance of seeking forgiveness can avert punishment, then how much more should we — who claim to love the Prophet ﷺ and seek to follow his way — cling to *istighfar* in our daily lives? Let us fill our moments with sincere repentance, for it is a treasure that brings peace to the heart, purifies the soul, and protects us from trials we cannot even imagine. The Prophet ﷺ himself used to seek forgiveness more than seventy times a day, teaching us that no one is beyond the need for Allah’s mercy. So, dear reader, never underestimate the power of a heartfelt *astaghfirullah* — it may be the very reason Allah’s mercy surrounds you and His punishment is kept far from you.
