Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-'Ishār (الْعِشَارُ): She-camels that have reached the tenth month of pregnancy, the most valuable and cherished livestock among the Arabs.
- ʿUṭṭilat (عُطِّلَت): Left abandoned, neglected, and unattended without any shepherd or caretaker.
Explanation of the Verse:
When the sun is wrapped up and its light is extinguished, when the stars fall and scatter, when the mountains are set in motion and become like scattered dust, and when the pregnant she-camels—those most precious and highly valued animals—are left completely neglected and abandoned, with no one to tend to them or care for them…
This scene paints a vivid picture of the Day of Resurrection, when the world as we know it will be turned upside down. The she-camels mentioned here were, in the Arab society of that time, the ultimate symbol of wealth, status, and provision. A man's honor and livelihood depended on them. Yet on that Day, their owners will be so overwhelmed by the terror and magnitude of what is unfolding that they will completely forget their most treasured possessions. The very things that once occupied their hearts and consumed their efforts will become utterly meaningless.
This verse serves as a profound reminder of the transient nature of this worldly life. Everything we hold dear—our wealth, our property, our status—will one day be left behind, and we will face the reality of our deeds. The neglect of these prized camels is not just a physical abandonment but a powerful symbol of how the priorities of this world will vanish in the face of the Hereafter's greatness.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this powerful imagery. If the most valuable possessions of the Arabs—their pregnant camels, their pride and joy—are left abandoned on that Day, then what of our own attachments? Our homes, our careers, our savings, our social standing—all of it will be left behind in an instant. The Qur'an presents this scene not to frighten us into despair, but to awaken our hearts to what truly matters. It invites us to invest in what will remain with us forever: our faith, our good deeds, and our relationship with our Creator. Let this verse be a gentle yet firm call to reorder our priorities, to love Allah and His Messenger more than anything this world offers, and to prepare for a Day when nothing will benefit us except our righteous actions. The door of repentance is open, and the mercy of Allah is vast—so seize this moment before that Day arrives.
