Surah At-Takwir — Verse 3

Word Meanings:

• Al-Jibāl (the mountains): The great, firm landforms firmly rooted in the earth.
• Suyyirat (are set in motion / moved): Removed from their places, uprooted, and driven away like clouds, until they become scattered dust.

Explanation of the Verse:

When the mountains are set in motion and removed from their places, they will no longer stand firm as they do in this world. They will be lifted from the face of the earth, shattered into pieces, and turned into scattered dust—just as Allah says elsewhere: "And the mountains will be like wool, carded" (Al-Qāri‘ah 101:5). This is part of the great upheaval that will occur on the Day of Resurrection, when the entire order of this world is overturned. The mountains that once seemed immovable and eternal—symbols of stability and strength—will be driven like clouds, losing all their grandeur and permanence. This scene is a powerful reminder that nothing in this creation is everlasting; only Allah, the Almighty, remains.

A Da‘wah Reflection:

This vivid image of the mountains being moved strikes at the heart of human reliance on worldly stability. We often place our trust in things we perceive as strong and unchanging—our homes, our wealth, our positions, even the very earth beneath our feet. Yet Allah tells us that on that Day, even the mightiest mountains will be swept away like dust. So where will we turn for security? The only true refuge is in Allah, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining. Let this verse inspire you to anchor your heart in what never perishes: faith, good deeds, and the hope of His mercy. The One who can move mountains with a single command is the One who hears your prayers, knows your struggles, and rewards your patience. Prepare for that Day, for it is nearer than you think, and its reality is certain. Turn to Allah now, before the mountains are set in motion and every soul faces what it has earned.
