Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Wuhush (الْوُحُوشُ): Wild animals, beasts of the earth, including all non-domesticated creatures that roam freely in the wilderness.
- Hushirat (حُشِرَتْ): Gathered together, assembled, or collected from every corner of the earth.
Explanation of the Verse:
When the sun is wrapped up and its light is extinguished, when the stars fall and scatter, when the mountains are set in motion and become like scattered dust, when the pregnant camels are left untended—abandoned by their owners who are consumed by the terror of that Day—and when the wild beasts are gathered together, that is the moment when all creatures, no matter how scattered or untamed they were in life, are brought into one assembly before their Lord.
The gathering of the wild beasts on the Day of Resurrection is a profound sign of Allah’s absolute justice and power. These animals, which in this worldly life roamed free, feared no authority, and followed only their instincts, will be summoned before their Creator. They will be gathered alongside humans in a single plain so that Allah may settle their accounts—even the wronged animal will have justice against the one that harmed it. When justice is fully served between them, they will be turned to dust, and the one who witnesses this will wish they too had been dust.
This verse reminds us that no creature is beyond Allah’s reach. If even the wild, untamed beasts cannot escape the gathering of that Day, then how can any human being imagine they could flee from accountability? The One who has power over every beast in the forest, every bird in the sky, and every fish in the sea, certainly has power over us all.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder this scene: the mighty lion, the swift deer, the cunning fox—all of them, once free and untamed, now stand gathered in humility before their Creator. If these creatures, who have no obligation of worship, are still brought forth for justice, what about us—who have been given intellect, revelation, and the noble duty of worship? How much greater is our responsibility, and how certain is our return to Him?
This verse fills the heart with awe and hope at the same time. Awe, because it reminds us of the certainty of the Hereafter and the all-encompassing justice of Allah. Hope, because it reassures us that no wrong will go unaddressed—every injustice, no matter how small, will be settled on that Day. So let us turn to our Lord now, while we still have the chance, with sincere repentance and good deeds. Let us not be like the wild beasts who lived heedless of their end, but rather be among those who prepare for the great gathering with faith, righteousness, and love for their Creator. Indeed, the wisest of people are those who remember that Day and live accordingly.
