Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Al-Fujjār (الفُجَّار): The wicked, the immoral, those who break away from the bounds of faith and righteousness—specifically the disbelievers and hypocrites who reject the truth.
  • Sijjīn (سِجِّين): A place of confinement and hardship; according to the most sound interpretations, it is the lowest earth (the seventh earth) and the abode of the wicked—a prison-like destination in the depths, sealed and decreed for them.

Explanation of the Verse:

The verse opens with "Kallā" (كَلَّا)—a powerful word of rebuke and affirmation. It strikes down the false assumption of those who deny the Day of Recompense, as if to say: "No, indeed! The matter is not as you imagine—there is certainly a reckoning and a return." Then comes the decisive declaration: the record of the wicked—their deeds, their fate, and their final destination—is in Sijjīn. This is not merely a place but a state of utter loss and constriction. It is the lowest of the low, the seventh earth, a prison of torment and humiliation from which there is no escape. Their deeds are written, sealed, and completed; nothing can be added or removed, for their destiny is fixed in misery. This is the opposite of the ease and honor the wicked sought in this world—they chased comfort and pleasure, yet their end is a narrow, crushing confinement. The verse serves as a stern warning that no one can flee from the justice of Allah, and that every soul’s record is preserved with absolute precision.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this profound truth: your deeds are not lost or forgotten. Every action, every word, every hidden intention is being recorded in a book that will be presented before you on the Day you meet your Lord. The wicked may appear triumphant in this fleeting world, but their ultimate abode is Sijjīn—a place of constriction and sorrow. How different is the path of the believer, whose record is raised to the highest heights! This verse invites you to choose your destination wisely. Do not be deceived by the glitter of this life or the arrogance of those who deny the Hereafter. Turn to your Creator with sincerity, fill your record with deeds of light, and save yourself from the depths of Sijjīn. The door of repentance is open, and Allah’s mercy is vast—so hasten to Him before the sealed book is closed, and let this warning awaken your heart to the everlasting success that lies in faith and righteousness.
