Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Wujūh (وُجُوهٌ): Faces.
  • Yawma'idhin (يَوْمَئِذٍ): On that Day — meaning the Day of Resurrection.
  • Khāshi‘ah (خَاشِعَةٌ): Humiliated, abased, downcast, and filled with fear and dread.

Explanation of the Verse:

On the Day of Judgment, humanity will be divided into two distinct groups: the blessed and the wretched. This verse describes the faces of the disbelievers and the wicked on that momentous Day. Their faces will be khāshi‘ah — utterly humiliated, lowered in disgrace, and overwhelmed by fear and anxiety. The terror of what lies ahead will be etched upon them, as they realise the reality of their deeds and the punishment that awaits them. Their features will reflect deep sorrow, regret, and submission to the inevitable decree of Allah. This humiliation is not merely external; it is the outward manifestation of an inner state of utter helplessness and despair, as they stand before their Lord, stripped of all pride and falsehood they once clung to in this worldly life.

A Da‘wah Reflection:

This vivid imagery serves as a profound reminder for every soul that has been given the gift of life and free will. The faces that once turned away in arrogance from the truth, that mocked the messengers, and that indulged in sin without remorse will be brought low on a Day when no intercession avails except by Allah’s permission. But the door of mercy is open *now* — in this fleeting world. Allah, the Most Merciful, has sent the Qur’an and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as a guiding light so that no one has an excuse. Let this verse awaken your heart: will you be among those whose faces shine with honour and joy on that Day, or among those whose faces are humiliated and downcast? The choice is yours, and the time to act is before the curtain falls. Turn to your Lord in sincere repentance, embrace His guidance, and let your face be one of light in this life and the next. For indeed, Allah’s mercy precedes His wrath, and He welcomes those who return to Him with open arms.
