Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- أُولُو الطَّوْلِ (ulū al-ṭawl): Those of wealth, affluence, and means — the rich and capable among them.
- الْقَاعِدِينَ (al-qāʿidīn): Those who stay behind — specifically referring to the excused ones, such as the weak, the sick, and the disabled who are unable to fight.
Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse exposes the true nature of the hypocrites who, despite possessing wealth, health, and every means to participate in jihad, shamelessly sought exemption when a surah was revealed commanding faith in Allah and striving alongside His Messenger ﷺ. When the call to battle came, these affluent individuals approached the Prophet ﷺ with a request dripping with insincerity: "Allow us to remain with those who stay behind."
Their request was not born of genuine incapacity but of cowardice and reluctance to sacrifice their comforts. They attempted to cloak their evasion in the guise of the legitimately excused — the weak, the chronically ill, and those with valid reasons — while they themselves were perfectly capable of fighting. This was a transparent deception, for they possessed the very means that obligated them to go forth.
The verse serves as a timeless reminder that wealth and capability are not merely privileges but trusts from Allah, carrying responsibilities. When the call to support the truth comes, those blessed with resources must lead the way, not seek excuses to lag behind. The hypocrites' attitude stands in stark contrast to the sincere believers, who eagerly rushed to spend and sacrifice when the call was made.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear believer, this verse invites you to examine your own heart. When the call comes to support your faith — whether through your wealth, your time, your knowledge, or your physical effort — do you respond with enthusiasm, or do you seek excuses? Allah has given you capabilities not to hoard them but to deploy them in His cause. The true believer sees every opportunity to serve the faith as a blessing, not a burden. Let this verse inspire you to be among the foremost in goodness, never among those who seek to be excused from noble deeds. For the reward of those who strive sincerely is immense, while the regret of those who hold back will be long and painful.
