Word Meanings:
لَا تُعْجِبْكَ (lā tu‘jibka): Do not let it amaze you or fill you with admiration.
تَزْهَقَ (tazhaqa): To depart or leave; here it means the soul leaving the body at death.
كَافِرُونَ (kāfirūn): Those who reject faith, disbelievers.
Explanation of the Verse:
O Messenger, do not let the wealth and children of the hypocrites impress you or capture your admiration. These are not signs of honor or divine favor; rather, they are part of Allah’s wise plan. Through these very blessings, Allah intends to test them and bring them suffering in this worldly life. They endure hardship in acquiring and safeguarding their wealth, face anxieties and losses, and are burdened by the worries of their offspring. All of this becomes a source of torment for them in this world. And the ultimate tragedy is that their souls will depart their bodies while they are still in a state of disbelief—dying without faith, which seals their fate with eternal punishment in the Hereafter.
Reflection and Call to Faith:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer. It teaches us not to envy the apparent prosperity of those who oppose the truth. Wealth and children are not necessarily signs of Allah’s pleasure; they can be a means of trial and even punishment. For the believer, what truly matters is the state of the heart and the firmness of faith. When we see the transient glitter of this world in the hands of the heedless, let us remember that the real treasure is iman (faith) and righteous deeds, which bring lasting peace in this life and eternal bliss in the next. Let this verse inspire you to detach your heart from the fleeting allure of worldly possessions and to invest your life in what truly pleases Allah—so that when your soul departs, it does so in a state of submission and hope, not in disbelief and loss. May Allah grant us steadfastness on the path of truth and protect us from the deception of this world.
If Allah should return you to a faction of them [after the expedition] and then they ask your permission to go out [to battle], say, "You will not go out with me, ever, and you will never fight with me an enemy. Indeed, you were satisfied with sitting [at home] the first time, so sit [now] with those who stay behind."
And do not pray [the funeral prayer, O Muhammad], over any of them who has died - ever - or stand at his grave. Indeed, they disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger and died while they were defiantly disobedient.
And let not their wealth and their children impress you. Allah only intends to punish them through them in this world and that their souls should depart [at death] while they are disbelievers.
And when a surah was revealed [enjoining them] to believe in Allah and to fight with His Messenger, those of wealth among them asked your permission [to stay back] and said, "Leave us to be with them who sit [at home]."
