Explanation of the Verse:
When you, O believers, return from your expedition, these hypocrites who stayed behind will come to you and swear solemn oaths by Allah, insisting that they had valid excuses for not joining you. They do this only to make you stop blaming them and to avoid any accountability. But Allah commands you: turn away from them, do not accept their excuses, and do not engage in lengthy arguments with them. Leave them in their state, for they are spiritually impure—their hearts are filled with hypocrisy, deceit, and filth that no apology can cleanse. Their true destination in the Hereafter is Hellfire, and that is a sufficient punishment for the sins and evil deeds they persistently committed. Their punishment fits their actions perfectly.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear believer, this verse teaches us a profound lesson about sincerity and discernment. The hypocrites are masters of empty words and false oaths, but Allah, the All-Knowing, exposes their reality to protect His sincere servants. He does not want you to waste your energy on those whose hearts are diseased; rather, He wants you to focus on purifying your own heart and strengthening your bond with Him. When you encounter people who are insincere, do not let their smooth talk disturb your peace—turn away with dignity, trust in Allah’s justice, and remember that their ultimate reckoning is with Him. This is a mercy from your Lord, guiding you to preserve your time, your faith, and your community from corruption. So hold fast to honesty, avoid hypocrisy in all its forms, and strive to be among those whose words match their deeds—for Allah loves the truthful and rewards them with His Paradise. Let this verse be a reminder that no oath can hide the truth from Allah, and no excuse can save a soul that refuses to repent.
