Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Ta'dhir" (يعتذرون): Offering excuses and justifications for one's failure to act.
- "Nabba'ana" (نبأنا): Informed us, made known to us.
- "Al-Ghayb wa al-Shahadah" (الغيب والشهادة): The unseen and the witnessed — that which is hidden from creation and that which is visible to them.
Tafsir (Explanation):
When you, O believers, return from your expedition (Tabuk), the hypocrites who stayed behind will come to you with fabricated excuses, trying to justify their failure to join you in jihad. They will swear by Allah that they had valid reasons, hoping to win your acceptance and silence your reproach.
But Allah commands His Messenger to respond to them: "Do not offer your excuses — we will never believe you. Allah has already informed us of the truth about you and your deception. Your words contradict your hearts, and your claims are exposed."
Then comes a profound warning and a call to reflection: "Allah and His Messenger will observe your deeds." This means that the Prophet ﷺ and the believers will see the reality of your actions — whether you repent sincerely from your hypocrisy or persist in your falsehood. Your condition will become manifest, and the truth about you will be known among people.
And ultimately, after death, you will all be returned to the One who knows everything — the hidden and the apparent, the secret and the public. Nothing escapes His knowledge. On that Day, He will inform you of all that you used to do, and you will be recompensed accordingly — with justice if you persisted in evil, or with mercy if you turned back in sincere repentance.
A Call to Reflection and Repentance:
This verse carries a timeless message for every soul: Allah sees what we conceal and what we reveal. No excuse can hide the truth from Him, and no deception can last forever. The hypocrites tried to deceive the believers with their words, but Allah exposed them.
Dear reader, let this be a moment of self-accountability. Before you offer excuses to people, remember that Allah knows your true intentions. The door of repentance is always open — do not delay it. Turn to Allah sincerely, for He accepts the repentance of those who return to Him with truthful hearts. The One who knows all secrets is also the Most Merciful, and He loves those who repent and purify themselves.
