Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Fakku (فَكُّ): To release, set free, or untie something that is bound or constrained.
- Raqabah (رَقَبَة): Literally means "neck," but in Islamic terminology, it refers to a slave or captive—male or female—who is held in bondage.
Explanation of the Verse:
After Allah Almighty described the steep and difficult path of goodness—the "climbing of the mountain pass"—He then clarifies what this path truly entails. He says: "It is the freeing of a neck"—meaning the emancipation of a slave from the shackles of servitude. This act involves releasing a believing soul from the humiliation of captivity and restoring their God-given dignity and freedom. It applies to both male and female slaves, regardless of their origin, and it is one of the greatest deeds that draws a person closer to their Lord.
This noble act is not merely a charitable gesture; it is a profound declaration of human equality and compassion. Islam, from its very inception, has sought to uproot slavery and build a society founded on justice, mercy, and mutual respect. By commanding the freeing of slaves, Allah elevates the status of the oppressed and teaches us that true righteousness lies in sacrificing our wealth and comfort for the sake of others—especially those who are most vulnerable.
A Call to Action:
Dear reader, reflect on the beauty of this divine command. Allah did not merely ask us to give charity or to pray—He pointed us toward the ultimate act of selflessness: breaking the chains of another human being. Even today, we can embody this spirit by freeing those trapped in modern forms of bondage—whether it be through supporting organizations that fight human trafficking, helping the indebted, or liberating minds from ignorance through education and guidance. Every step you take to ease another's burden is a step up that steep mountain pass, and every chain you help break is a chain removed from your own soul on the Day of Judgment. Let this verse inspire you to be a source of freedom and hope in a world that desperately needs it.
