Word Meanings:
- Iṭ'ām – Feeding, providing food to someone.
- Yawm – Day.
- Dhī masghabah – A day of severe hunger and famine, when food is scarce and people are in dire need.
Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse highlights one of the greatest acts of righteousness that draws a person closer to Allah: feeding the hungry on a day of severe famine and scarcity. It is not merely about giving food in times of abundance, but rather about extending a helping hand when resources are limited and people are most desperate. The verse specifically mentions feeding an orphan who is a relative, combining the virtue of charity with the virtue of maintaining family ties, or feeding a poor person who is utterly destitute and has nothing at all. This act of compassion is a profound demonstration of faith, for it requires sacrifice and empathy, especially when one's own provisions are scarce. It reflects the spirit of solidarity and mutual care that Islam instills in its followers, urging them to share the blessings Allah has given them, even in difficult times.
Da'wah Reflection:
Imagine the immense reward and the deep joy that fills the heart when you feed a hungry soul on a day when food is hard to find. This verse calls upon every believer to be a source of hope and relief for others, reminding us that our wealth and provisions are a trust from Allah. By feeding the needy, we not only fulfill a moral duty but also purify our souls and strengthen our bond with our Creator. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "He is not a believer who sleeps full while his neighbor goes hungry." Let this verse inspire you to look around, to see those in need, and to act with generosity and love. For every morsel you give in the cause of Allah, He will multiply it manifold, and on the Day of Judgment, it will be a shield for you. Be among those who race to do good, for the doors of mercy are open, and the reward with Allah is beyond imagination.
