Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Yateeman (يَتِيمًا): An orphan — a child who has lost his father before reaching maturity.
- Dha Maqrabah (ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ): One who is a near relative — having kinship ties with the giver.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues to describe the noble act of charity mentioned in the preceding verses — specifically, the feeding of the needy during times of severe hunger and scarcity. Allah specifies two categories of people deserving of this kindness:
First: An orphan who is a close relative. This combines two great virtues in a single act: the virtue of charity (sadaqah) and the virtue of maintaining family ties (silat ar-rahim). When you feed an orphan from your own family, you are not only fulfilling the right of the orphan but also strengthening the bonds of kinship that Islam holds sacred. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "The one who cares for an orphan and I will be together in Paradise like this" — and he held his index and middle fingers together.
Second (as mentioned in the following verse): A poor person in dire need — one who is destitute, lying in the dust with nothing to sustain himself.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear believer, contemplate the beauty of this divine guidance! Allah is teaching us that true righteousness is not merely in rituals, but in compassion made tangible. The orphan who shares your blood, who carries your family name, who looks to you with eyes of hope — he is your responsibility and your opportunity for immense reward.
Imagine the scene: a day of severe hunger, when food is scarce and precious. In that moment, you choose to share what you have with a fatherless child from your own family. This is not just charity — it is a profound act of love that mirrors the mercy of Allah Himself, who calls Himself Al-Wadud (The Most Loving).
Islam elevates the care of orphans to the highest rank. The Prophet (peace be upon him) promised that whoever sponsors an orphan will be as close to him in Paradise as two fingers are to each other. And when that orphan is also your relative, the reward multiplies — you are simultaneously fulfilling the command to care for the vulnerable and the command to uphold family ties.
Let this verse inspire you to look around your own family and community. Is there an orphan among your relatives? A child who has lost his father and needs guidance, support, or simply a warm meal? Your outstretched hand today could be the means by which Allah elevates your rank in the Hereafter. Do not delay — for the opportunity to do good may not always be there tomorrow.
