Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Khaba" (خاب): Failed, lost, or was deprived of success and prosperity.
  • "Dassaha" (دَسَّاهَا): Derived from *dassa*, meaning to bury, hide, or conceal something. Here, it refers to a person who buries their soul—hiding it beneath layers of sin, corruption, and disobedience to Allah.

Tafsir (Explanation):

After Allah Almighty takes a solemn oath by the sun, the moon, the day, the night, the sky, the earth, and the human soul—which He perfected and inspired with both its sense of righteousness and its inclination to evil—He declares the outcome of two paths. Just as the previous verse proclaimed the success of the one who purifies their soul, this verse proclaims the utter failure and ruin of the one who corrupts and buries their soul.

To "bury" one's soul means to suppress its natural inclination toward goodness, to drown its conscience under the weight of sins, and to neglect its purification. Such a person does not merely commit a sin; they actively hide their God-given potential for virtue beneath layers of disobedience, arrogance, and heedlessness. They degrade their own noble essence, treating the soul that Allah breathed into them with contempt. The result is *khibah*—a profound loss that encompasses both this world and the Hereafter. They lose their peace of heart, their moral compass, and ultimately their salvation, failing in the very purpose for which they were created.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, your soul is a trust from your Lord—a pristine gem that He fashioned with His own hands and breathed into you from His spirit. Every time you choose obedience, you polish that gem and let it shine. Every time you fall into sin and persist in it, you bury that gem deeper into the mud of this world. But know this: it is never too late to dig it out. The door of repentance is open until the final hour. Allah does not ask for perfection; He asks for sincere return. When you stumble, rise again. When you sin, seek His forgiveness. Do not let Shaytan convince you that your soul is too dirty to be cleansed—for the One who created it is the Most Merciful, and His mercy encompasses all things. Purify your soul today, and taste the sweetness of success that no worldly treasure can ever match.
