Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Thamud: An ancient Arab tribe that lived in the rocky dwellings of Al-Hijr (Mada'in Salih) between Hijaz and Tabuk. They were the successors of the 'Ad people in power and prosperity.
  • Taghwa: Transgression, exceeding all bounds in sin and arrogance, and persisting in rebellion against Allah's commands.

Explanation of the Verse:

The verse tells us that the people of Thamud rejected their prophet, Salih (peace be upon him), and this rejection was not born out of ignorance or confusion—it was the direct result of their taghwa, their willful transgression and arrogance. They had reached such a level of insolence and stubbornness that the truth became unbearable to them. Their hearts had hardened, and their pride blinded them from recognizing the clear signs that Allah had placed before them.

This is a profound lesson for us: sin is not merely an act—it is a disease that corrupts the heart and the mind. When a person persists in disobedience, their ability to accept guidance diminishes. The Thamud were given a miracle—a she-camel that emerged from the rock as a living proof of Salih's truthfulness. Yet, because of their taghwa, they saw it not as a sign but as a threat to their way of life. They were warned that the she-camel would drink from the well on one day, and they on another, and that harming her would bring destruction. But their arrogance drove them to kill her, and thus they sealed their own fate.

The verse serves as a timeless reminder that the greatest obstacle to faith is not intellectual doubt but moral corruption. When we allow our desires to override our conscience, we begin to justify even the most heinous acts. The Thamud did not merely reject Salih—they rejected all the messengers, because the message was one and the same. Their transgression became the very reason for their downfall.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, let this verse be a mirror for your own soul. Do you find yourself resisting the truth because it demands change? Do you feel a heaviness when you hear the call to prayer or the words of the Quran? This is the beginning of taghwa—a slippery slope that leads to ruin. But the door of repentance is always open. Allah does not desire destruction for His servants; He desires their return to Him. The very fact that you are reading this today is a sign of His mercy calling you back. Do not let pride and sin harden your heart as they did for Thamud. Humble yourself before your Lord, and you will find that He is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful. The Quran is not a book of stories from the past—it is a living guide, and every verse is an invitation to save yourself before it is too late.

9قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن زَكَّاهَا
He has succeeded who purifies it,

And he has failed who instills it [with corruption].
11كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِطَغْوَاهَا
Thamud denied [their prophet] by reason of their transgression,
12إِذِ انبَعَثَ أَشْقَاهَا
When the most wretched of them was sent forth.
13فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ نَاقَةَ اللَّهِ وَسُقْيَاهَا
And the messenger of Allah [Salih] said to them, "[Do not harm] the she-camel of Allah or [prevent her from] her drink."
