Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- أَفْلَحَ (Aflaha): Succeeded, triumphed, and attained what one seeks.
- زَكَّاهَا (Zakkāhā): Purified it, cleansed it from sins, and caused it to grow in goodness and virtue.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this profound verse, Allah declares a universal truth about success and salvation: "Indeed, he who purifies his soul has succeeded." The soul (nafs) is the essence of a human being, and Allah has created it with an innate inclination toward both good and evil, as mentioned in the preceding verses. He has inspired it with the knowledge of its wrongdoings and its righteousness, granting every person the ability to distinguish between the two paths.
To "purify" the soul means to cleanse it from the filth of sins, to adorn it with noble character, and to nurture it through acts of obedience, worship, and righteousness. It involves both removing the vices—such as arrogance, envy, greed, and hypocrisy—and cultivating the virtues—such as sincerity, humility, patience, gratitude, and love for Allah and His creation. This purification is not a one-time act but a continuous journey of self-improvement and spiritual growth, guided by the Qur'an and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
The verse uses the word "aflaha," which encompasses not only success in this worldly life but, more importantly, eternal success in the Hereafter. True prosperity is not measured by wealth, status, or material achievements, but by the state of one's heart and soul. A person may acquire the entire world, yet if their soul is corrupt, they have lost everything. Conversely, a person may possess little of this world, yet if their soul is pure, they have attained the greatest treasure.
This verse serves as a beautiful reminder that Allah, in His infinite mercy, has given every soul the tools and the guidance needed to succeed. He has sent prophets, revealed scriptures, and instilled within us a conscience that knows right from wrong. The choice, then, lies with us. Every moment presents an opportunity to purify our souls—through sincere repentance, through acts of kindness, through seeking knowledge, and through drawing closer to our Creator.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse is a divine invitation to look within yourself and ask: What is the state of my soul? Are you nurturing it with the light of faith, or are you allowing the darkness of sin to overshadow it? The door of repentance is always open, and Allah's mercy is vaster than any sin you may have committed. Begin today, right now, by turning to Allah with a sincere heart. Pray, seek His forgiveness, and strive to improve one aspect of your character at a time. Remember that every small step toward purity is a step toward true success—a success that will shine brightly on the Day when neither wealth nor children will avail, and only a pure heart brought to Allah will be of benefit. Embrace this purification, and you will taste the sweetness of faith and the peace that comes from a soul at rest with its Lord.
