Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Fa-alhamaha (فَأَلْهَمَهَا): He inspired or instilled in it (the soul) — meaning He made it understand and perceive, without prior teaching or external instruction.
  • Fujuraha (فُجُورَهَا): Its wickedness, sinfulness, or disobedience — the path of evil and transgression.
  • Taqwaha (تَقْوَاهَا): Its righteousness, piety, or God-consciousness — the path of goodness and obedience to Allah.

Explanation of the Verse:

After Allah Almighty mentions His magnificent creation — the sun, the moon, the day, the night, the sky, and the earth — He now turns to the most honored of His creations in this context: the human soul. Allah says that He inspired every soul with both its wickedness and its piety. This means He gave every human being an innate ability to distinguish between right and wrong, between good and evil. He placed within us a natural compass — a fitrah (innate disposition) — that recognizes the ugliness of sin and the beauty of righteousness. This inspiration is not a forced decree; rather, it is a divine gift that enables us to choose, to strive, and to be held accountable for our actions. Allah did not leave us in darkness; He illuminated our inner being with the knowledge of both paths, making us responsible for which one we follow. This is a profound mercy — for how could we be judged fairly without being shown the way? And how could we earn Paradise without the ability to choose virtue over vice?

A Da'wah Reflection:

Beloved reader, ponder this magnificent verse! The Creator of the heavens and the earth did not abandon you to confusion. He breathed into your soul the very ability to know Him, to know what pleases Him, and to know what angers Him. This is a sign of His immense love and care for you. When you feel that inner voice pulling you away from sin, or that gentle nudge toward goodness — that is the inspiration Allah placed within you. He has equipped you with everything you need to succeed. The question is: will you listen to that inner light, or will you drown it out with the noise of worldly desires? The very next verses tell us that the one who purifies their soul succeeds, and the one who corrupts it fails. So, dear soul, you hold a treasure within you — a divine guidance that never leaves you. Nurture it with prayer, with remembrance of Allah, and with righteous deeds. Let your soul shine with the light of taqwa, and you will taste a success that no worldly achievement can match. Allah has shown you the way — now take that first step toward Him, and He will come to you with love and mercy.

And [by] the earth and He who spread it
And [by] the soul and He who proportioned it
And inspired it [with discernment of] its wickedness and its righteousness,
He has succeeded who purifies it,
And he has failed who instills it [with corruption].
