Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- اقْرَأْ (Iqra'): Read, recite, or proclaim — a command to read and recite what is revealed.
- وَرَبُّكَ (wa Rabbuka): And your Lord — referring to Allah, the Creator and Sustainer of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
- الْأَكْرَمُ (al-Akram): The Most Generous, the Most Noble — the One whose generosity and honor surpass all others, with no limit or deficiency.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this blessed verse, Allah addresses His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) with a second command to read, following the first command in the previous verse. This repetition emphasizes the importance and urgency of the act of reading and reciting the revelation. Allah says: "Read, and your Lord is the Most Generous."
This is a source of immense comfort and reassurance for the Prophet (peace be upon him). At the moment when he was overwhelmed by the weight of the first revelation in the cave of Hira, Allah reminds him that the One commanding him is not a harsh or demanding master, but rather the Most Generous Lord — the One whose kindness, bounty, and honor have no equal. Unlike earthly kings or rulers who command and may withhold, Allah’s generosity is boundless. He commands the Prophet to read, and He Himself guarantees the honor, support, and success of this mission.
The verse also carries a profound lesson for all believers: when Allah commands us to do something — whether it is reading His Book, performing acts of worship, or spreading His message — we should never fear failure or humiliation, for the One who commands us is al-Akram, the Most Generous. He does not command us except out of His infinite mercy and wisdom, and He rewards those who obey Him with honor in this life and the Hereafter.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse is a beautiful reminder that Islam is a religion of honor and generosity. Allah, the Most Generous, has given us the greatest gift — the Qur'an — and He calls us to read it, understand it, and live by it. When you open the Book of Allah, you are not merely reading words; you are engaging in a conversation with the Most Generous Lord, who wants nothing but good for you. He has already honored you by creating you, teaching you, and guiding you. Now, He invites you to draw closer to Him through His words. So, dear reader, do not hesitate — read the Qur'an with a sincere heart, and you will find that your Lord, al-Akram, will shower you with His mercy, knowledge, and countless blessings. No one who turns to Him is ever turned away empty-handed, for His generosity knows no bounds.
