Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- ʿAllama (عَلَّمَ): He taught — indicating the act of imparting knowledge and skill.
- Al-Qalam (الْقَلَمِ): The pen — the instrument used for writing, symbolizing the means of recording and transmitting knowledge.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues the opening of Surah Al-'Alaq, where Allah describes Himself as the Creator and the Supreme Benefactor. After mentioning His creation of humanity from a clinging clot, He now highlights another profound blessing: teaching by the pen.
The pen is a magnificent tool that distinguishes humans from other creatures. Through it, knowledge is preserved, ideas are transmitted, and civilizations are built. Allah, in His infinite mercy, taught human beings the art of writing — a skill that allows them to record their thoughts, share their discoveries, and pass down wisdom from one generation to the next. This is not merely about ink on paper; it is about the elevation of humanity from ignorance to enlightenment.
The verse emphasizes that all knowledge — whether sacred or worldly — ultimately originates from Allah. He is the First Teacher, who endowed humans with the capacity to learn, reason, and express themselves through written words. The pen becomes a symbol of divine generosity, as it opens doors to understanding the universe, reflecting on creation, and comprehending the revelations sent down to His prophets.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder this: the very first command in the Qur'an is "Iqra" (Read!), and immediately after, Allah reminds us that He taught by the pen. This is a direct invitation to seek knowledge, to value learning, and to use our intellect for good. Islam is a religion that honors the pursuit of knowledge — from the ink of the scholar to the pen of the student, every effort to learn is a form of worship when done with sincere intention.
The pen is a trust from Allah. What will you write with it? Will you spread truth, kindness, and wisdom? Or will you neglect this gift? Let this verse inspire you to read, to learn, and to use your knowledge to draw closer to your Creator. The One who taught by the pen is the same One who created you from a clot — He has given you the means to rise, so rise with gratitude and purpose.
