Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Ayyām (أَيَّام): Literally "days," but here it refers to the calamities, punishments, and destructive events that befell past nations.
  • Khalaw (خَلَوْا): Those who passed away, went before, or preceded in time.
  • Fantaẓirū (فَانتَظِرُوا): Wait, anticipate, or await.

Tafsir (Explanation):

After the Prophet (peace be upon him) presented the clear signs and warnings to the disbelievers of Makkah, and they stubbornly persisted in their denial, Allah poses a profound rhetorical question: "Are these people waiting for anything other than the likes of the days of those who passed away before them?"

This verse draws a powerful parallel between the stubborn disbelievers of Makkah and the arrogant nations of old—like ʿĀd, Thamūd, the people of Nūḥ, and Pharaoh—who rejected their messengers and were subsequently seized by divine punishment. The "days" mentioned here are not ordinary days but the catastrophic moments when Allah's wrath descended: the devastating wind, the mighty scream, the overwhelming flood, and the drowning sea. These were days of reckoning that left no trace of the oppressors.

The verse serves as both a warning and a comfort. It warns the disbelievers that their fate is sealed if they continue on their path—they are no better than those who came before them, and the same divine law applies to them. It also comforts the believers, assuring them that Allah's justice is inevitable and that the arrogant will not escape His grasp.

Then comes the divine command to the Prophet (peace be upon him): "Say: 'Then wait! Indeed, I am with you among those who wait.'" This is a declaration of certainty and confidence. The Prophet is instructed to challenge them with patient resolve—if you are waiting for something, then wait; I too am waiting, but I am waiting for Allah's victory, His help, and His promise to be fulfilled. The believer's waiting is one of hope and trust, while the disbeliever's waiting is one of impending doom.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on the lesson embedded in this verse. History is not merely a collection of stories—it is a living testimony to Allah's unchanging law: *"And you will never find in the law of Allah any change"* (Qur'an 33:62). The same fate that befell the tyrants of old awaits every oppressor who rejects the truth. But for those who believe and do righteous deeds, there is a different kind of waiting—a waiting filled with hope, patience, and the sweet certainty of Allah's promise.

This verse invites you to choose which side you stand on. Will you be among those who wait for regret and punishment, or among those who wait for mercy and victory? The choice is yours, and the outcome is guaranteed by the One who never breaks His promise. Embrace the truth today, and let your waiting be a waiting for the beautiful reward of Allah—for indeed, His help is near, and His promise is true.
