Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Shahīdan (شَهِيدًا): A witness, one who testifies to the truth with full knowledge and certainty.
- Ghāfilīn (غَافِلِينَ): Unaware, heedless, or oblivious—having no perception, knowledge, or consciousness of something.
- Ibādatikum (عِبَادَتِكُمْ): Your worship or acts of devotion directed toward us (the false deities).
Explanation of the Verse:
On the Day of Judgment, when the polytheists are confronted with the reality of their shirk (associating partners with Allah), the false deities they worshipped—whether idols, angels, righteous people, or jinn—will utterly disown them. In this verse, those deities speak, declaring: "Allah alone is sufficient as a Witness between us and you." They affirm that Allah, in His perfect justice and knowledge, testifies to the truth of their claim: they were completely unaware of the worship directed toward them. They neither heard the prayers, nor saw the prostrations, nor comprehended the devotion offered to them. They were lifeless stones, or created beings who had no knowledge of what happened after they left this world—or in the case of angels and prophets, they never approved of being worshipped and never commanded it.
This is a powerful scene of utter disavowal. The very objects of worship reject their worshippers, leaving the polytheists with no intercessor, no helper, and no excuse. The deities make it clear: "We never asked you to worship us, we never accepted your worship, and we were entirely heedless of it." Thus, the false hopes of the mushrikūn crumble, and they stand exposed before Allah's perfect justice.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, ponder this profound truth: the idols and false gods that people devote their lives to—can they hear a single word? Can they answer a single prayer? Can they even know that you exist? Yet Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing, is fully aware of every whisper of your heart and every movement of your soul. He is the only One worthy of your worship, the only One who hears your supplication, and the only One who can grant you success in this life and the next.
This verse invites you to purify your heart from all forms of hidden shirk—such as showing off in worship, or relying on created beings as if they hold divine power. Turn sincerely to Allah alone, for He is the Witness over all things, and He has promised to guide those who seek Him with a sincere heart. Let this truth fill you with peace: you worship a Lord who is ever-present, ever-aware, and ever-responsive. There is no greater honor than to be a servant of Allah, and no greater loss than to devote your life to that which cannot even perceive you. Embrace the pure monotheism of Islam, and taste the sweetness of a heart connected to its true Creator.
