Tafsir (Interpretation):
This verse addresses a profound reality about human nature and the path to truth. Allah informs us that most of the polytheists—and indeed, most of those who stray from guidance—follow nothing but mere conjecture and baseless assumptions in their beliefs and practices. They claim that their idols intercede for them, that their ancestors were upon the truth, and that their customs are justified—yet all of this rests upon nothing more than inherited tradition, guesswork, and wishful thinking, not upon any certain knowledge or divine revelation.
The verse then delivers a decisive principle: "Indeed, conjecture avails nothing against the truth." This is a universal rule—assumptions, no matter how widespread or deeply held, can never replace certainty. A person cannot build their faith, their worship, or their eternal destiny upon "perhaps" and "maybe." The truth is what Allah has revealed and what the intellect confirms through sound reasoning; anything else is merely a shadow that vanishes when the sun of certainty rises.
This principle carries a powerful lesson for every seeker of truth: your religion cannot be inherited blindly, nor can it be based on what "most people do" or what "feels right." It must be built upon knowledge—knowledge of Allah, His Book, and the authentic teachings of His Messenger ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ himself warned against following assumptions, saying: "Beware of suspicion, for suspicion is the falsest of speech" (agreed upon). How can one entrust their eternal salvation to something that is merely a guess?
Finally, the verse closes with a reminder that carries both warning and hope: "Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing of what they do." Nothing escapes His knowledge—not the deeds of the polytheists, not the sincerity of the believers, not even the whispers of the heart. This is a warning to those who persist in conjecture and falsehood: their deeds are fully recorded, and they will be recompensed accordingly. But it is also a comfort to the believer: Allah knows your efforts to seek truth, your struggles to follow guidance, and your sincere intentions—and He will not let a single good deed go to waste.
So let this verse be a call to every soul: abandon the path of assumption, and embrace the path of certainty. Seek knowledge, ask questions, and verify your beliefs with the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger. For the One who created you knows exactly what you do—and He has made the path to truth clear for whoever sincerely desires it.
