And on the Day when He will gather them, [it will be] as if they had not remained [in the world] but an hour of the day, [and] they will know each other. Those will have lost who denied the meeting with Allah and were not guided

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Yahshuruhum: He gathers them and assembles them for the Day of Reckoning.
  • Yalbasu: They remained, stayed, or tarried (in this world or in their graves).
  • Yata'arafoon: They recognize one another, just as they used to know each other in worldly life.
  • Khasira: They lost utterly, suffered ruin and perdition.
  • Kadhdhaboo bi-liqaa' Allah: They denied the meeting with Allah — the resurrection, the reckoning, and the recompense.
  • Muhtadeen: Guided ones, those who follow the path of truth and righteousness.

Explanation of the Verse:

On that awesome Day, Allah will gather all of humanity for the final reckoning — and the disbelievers will feel as though their entire stay in this world, from birth to death and even through the long wait in their graves, was no more than a single fleeting hour of a daytime. Time itself will seem to have collapsed, and the weight of worldly concerns that once consumed them will appear utterly trivial.

In that brief moment of awakening, people will recognize one another — just as they knew each other in the life of this world — exchanging glances of familiarity. But then, the sheer terror and overwhelming reality of the Day of Judgment will cut that recognition short. All bonds of acquaintance will dissolve, and every soul will be consumed by its own account.

At that point, the truth becomes painfully clear: those who denied the meeting with their Lord — who rejected the resurrection, the reckoning, and the promise of reward and punishment — have indeed lost everything. They have suffered the ultimate loss, for they were never guided in this world to the straight path. They lived, struggled, and toiled for a fleeting hour, only to find themselves bankrupt before their Creator, with no good deeds to their name and no intercessor to save them.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, pause for a moment and reflect on this profound scene. The life you are living right now — with its worries, ambitions, and distractions — will one day feel like no more than a single hour of a single day. The people you know, the relationships you cherish, the status you strive for — all of it will pass in the blink of an eye.

But the meeting with Allah is real. It is certain. And the one who prepares for that meeting by believing, by doing good, and by following the guidance of the Qur'an will never taste loss. Instead, they will find that their fleeting hour was spent in the most profitable of trades — exchanging a temporary world for an eternal paradise.

So do not be among those who deny the meeting with Allah. Let this verse awaken your heart. Let it remind you that the true success lies not in the length of your days, but in the quality of your deeds. Turn to your Lord now, while you still have time, and you will never be among the losers.

📜 Verse 43-47 — Yunus

And among them are those who look at you. But can you guide the blind although they will not [attempt to] see?
Indeed, Allah does not wrong the people at all, but it is the people who are wronging themselves.
And on the Day when He will gather them, [it will be] as if they had not remained [in the world] but an hour of the day, [and] they will know each other. Those will have lost who denied the meeting with Allah and were not guided
And whether We show you some of what We promise them, [O Muhammad], or We take you in death, to Us is their return; then, [either way], Allah is a witness concerning what they are doing
And for every nation is a messenger. So when their messenger comes, it will be judged between them in justice, and they will not be wronged
