Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Matāʿ (مَتَاعٌ): A temporary enjoyment, a brief pleasure, or a passing provision in this worldly life.
- Marjiʿuhum (مَرْجِعُهُمْ): Their return or final destination.
- Nudhīquhum (نُذِيقُهُمْ): We will make them taste — used metaphorically to describe experiencing severe punishment directly.
- Al-ʿAdhāb al-Shadīd (الْعَذَابَ الشَّدِيدَ): The severe, intense punishment (in the Hereafter).
- Bimā kānū yakfurūn (بِمَا كَانُوا يَكْفُرُونَ): Because of their persistent disbelief and denial of Allah’s signs and messengers.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse serves as a powerful reminder and a warning to those who persist in disbelief and mock the truth. Allah describes the reality of their situation: whatever pleasures, wealth, status, or fleeting joys they enjoy in this world are nothing more than a temporary provision — a short-lived enjoyment that will inevitably come to an end. They should not be deceived by these transient delights, for they are like a mirage that vanishes as soon as one tries to grasp it.
Then comes the decisive turn: "Then to Us is their return." After this brief worldly life ends, whether through death or on the Day of Resurrection, all people — without exception — will return to their Creator. No one escapes this appointment. At that point, the true justice of Allah will be established.
Finally, the verse concludes with the consequence of their actions: "Then We will make them taste the severe punishment because of what they used to disbelieve." This punishment is not arbitrary or unjust; it is the direct and fitting result of their persistent rejection of Allah’s signs, their denial of His messengers, and their refusal to submit to the truth that was made clear to them. The severity of the punishment reflects the gravity of their crime — turning away from the very purpose of their existence.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse is not merely a warning to others — it is a mirror for every soul. It invites you to pause and ask yourself: *What am I living for?* If this world is but a fleeting moment, and our true home is with Allah, then why do we invest so much in what will surely perish and neglect what will last forever?
The good news is that Allah’s mercy is vast, and His door of repentance is open until the moment of death. You do not have to be among those who taste the severe punishment. You can be among those who return to Allah in this life — through sincere faith, righteous deeds, and love for His messengers — so that when you meet Him, you meet Him with a heart that is at peace, and you receive His eternal reward instead of His punishment.
Let this verse be a wake-up call, not a source of despair. Every day you breathe is a new opportunity to turn back to your Lord, to embrace the truth of Islam, and to secure a future that is truly everlasting. Choose wisely, for this life is short, but the Hereafter is forever.
