Key Words and Phrases:

  • "Ajran" (أجرًا): A reward, payment, or compensation.
  • "Fatarani" (فَطَرَنِي): Created me; brought me into existence from nothing, with a specific nature and disposition.
  • "Ta'qilun" (تَعْقِلُون): You use your intellect and reason to discern the truth.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this profound verse, Prophet Hud (peace be upon him) addresses his people with a powerful argument that cuts through all their excuses and suspicions. He declares: "O my people, I do not ask you for any payment or reward for delivering this message to you." This statement is a clear refutation of any claim that he was seeking worldly gain, wealth, or status through his prophethood. His call to worship Allah alone and abandon idolatry was purely sincere and selfless.

He then clarifies the source of his ultimate reward: "My reward is only with the One who created me." This is a beautiful expression of complete reliance on Allah. The word "Fatarani" (created me) is significant—it reminds them that Allah is the Creator of all, the One who fashioned them and gave them life, and therefore He alone deserves their worship and obedience. Prophet Hud is saying: I do not look to you for compensation; I look to my Creator, who knows my efforts and will reward me accordingly.

The verse concludes with a rhetorical question that appeals to their intellect: "Will you not then use your reason?" This is a gentle yet firm call to reflection. It challenges them to think clearly: If the prophet is asking for nothing in return, and if his message is pure and sincere, then what is their excuse for rejecting it? Their refusal to listen is not based on logic or evidence, but on blind stubbornness and attachment to the ways of their forefathers.

A Call to Reflection and Sincerity:

This verse carries a timeless lesson for every believer. It teaches us the purity of the prophetic mission—a mission driven not by personal gain, but by love for humanity and obedience to Allah. When we call others to goodness, we should purify our intentions and seek only Allah's pleasure. When we serve the Deen, we should not expect worldly compensation, for our true reward is with the One who created us and knows our hearts.

Reflect on this: the prophets were the most sincere people, and they endured immense hardship for the sake of guiding their communities. They did not ask for wages, but only for the happiness of their people in this life and the Hereafter. If we truly use our intellect, we will see that Islam is the path of truth, sincerity, and salvation. Let us open our hearts to this beautiful message and respond to the call of Allah, for in His hands is the best of rewards.

That is from the news of the unseen which We reveal to you, [O Muhammad]. You knew it not, neither you nor your people, before this. So be patient; indeed, the [best] outcome is for the righteous.
And to 'Aad [We sent] their brother Hud. He said, "O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. You are not but inventors [of falsehood].
O my people, I do not ask you for it any reward. My reward is only from the one who created me. Then will you not reason?
And O my people, ask forgiveness of your Lord and then repent to Him. He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in showers and increase you in strength [added] to your strength. And do not turn away, [being] criminals."
They said, "O Hud, you have not brought us clear evidence, and we are not ones to leave our gods on your say-so. Nor are we believers in you.
