Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Baiyinah (بَيِّنَةٍ): A clear, decisive proof or evident miracle that leaves no room for doubt.
- Aalihatina (آلِهَتِنَا): Our gods — the idols and false deities they worshipped.
- An qawlıka (عَن قَوْلِكَ): Because of your statement or on account of your saying.
- Mu’minin (مُؤْمِنِينَ): Believers — those who accept and affirm the truth of what you say.
Tafsir (Explanation):
When Prophet Hud (peace be upon him) called his people to worship Allah alone and warned them of His punishment, they responded with arrogance and stubbornness. They said: "O Hud, you have not brought us any clear proof or visible miracle that would compel us to accept your message. We see no evidence that you are a messenger from Allah. And we will not abandon our gods — the idols we have worshipped for generations — simply because you tell us to. Your words alone, without any sign or demonstration, are not enough to make us change our religion. And we do not believe you at all in what you claim."
Their words reveal three deep-rooted attitudes: first, they demanded a miracle while rejecting the clear signs already before them; second, they clung to ancestral customs and blind imitation, refusing to abandon their idols even when confronted with truth; and third, they flatly denied the prophethood of Hud, closing their hearts to guidance.
This response shows how a people can become so attached to falsehood that they reject truth without even examining it. They did not ask for understanding — they simply dismissed the call. They made their idols a matter of pride and heritage, not of evidence or reason.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, see how the people of Hud responded to the truth — not with open minds, but with prejudice and arrogance. They demanded a sign, yet when the truth was presented to them, they turned away. How many of us today do the same? We may not worship idols of stone, but we can worship our desires, our habits, our social status, or our blind following of ancestors — refusing to accept the truth of the Qur'an and the Sunnah because it challenges our comfort.
Allah, in His mercy, sent messengers with clear proofs and miracles. The greatest miracle remains the Qur'an itself — a book that challenges humanity to produce even one chapter like it, and no one has ever succeeded. This is the living proof of the truth of Islam. Open your heart to it, and you will find peace that no idol or false belief can ever give. Do not be like those who rejected Hud — for their end was destruction, while those who believed were saved by Allah's mercy. Let your heart be soft, your mind be open, and your soul be ready to accept the truth wherever it appears.
