Word Meanings:

  • Qā'imah (قَائِمَة): Standing; here it means she was standing behind the curtain, serving or attending, and listening to the conversation.
  • Fa ḍaḥikat (فَضَحِكَت): She laughed; this was a smile of joy and amazement, not mockery. It expressed her delight at the good news and her wonder at the divine power.
  • Bashsharnāhā (بَشَّرْنَاهَا): We gave her glad tidings — a divine announcement of something joyous.
  • Min warā'i Isḥāq (مِن وَرَاءِ إِسْحَاقَ): After Isḥāq; meaning following his birth.
  • Yaʿqūb (يَعْقُوب): Jacob — the son of Isḥāq, and thus the grandson of Ibrāhīm.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse takes us into the sacred moment when the angels visited Prophet Ibrāhīm (peace be upon him) with the glad tidings of a son. His wife, Sarah — may Allah be pleased with her — was standing behind the curtain, listening to the conversation between her husband and the honored guests. When she heard the news that she would give birth to a child despite her old age, she laughed — a smile of pure joy and wonder at Allah’s infinite power. Her laughter was not one of disbelief, but of amazement at how the Almighty could grant her a child at such an advanced age.

Then Allah, in His mercy, gave her an even greater blessing: not only would she bear a son named Isḥāq, but after Isḥāq would come his son Yaʿqūb (Jacob). This meant she would live long enough to see her grandson — a sign of a blessed lineage that would continue through generations of prophets. This was a double glad tiding: the birth of a righteous son, and the continuation of that noble line through his offspring.

This verse teaches us profound lessons. First, it shows that Allah’s mercy knows no bounds — He can grant what seems impossible when we place our trust in Him. Sarah was old, and yet Allah gave her a child. Second, it reminds us that true joy comes from the blessings of righteous offspring — children who carry the legacy of faith and goodness. Third, it demonstrates the honor of the family of Ibrāhīm, a family chosen by Allah to be a source of guidance for humanity.

Dear reader, reflect on this: when Allah promises, He fulfills — even when circumstances seem hopeless. So never despair of Allah’s mercy, and always keep hope alive in your heart. For the One who gave Sarah a child in her old age, and a grandson after that, is the same Lord who hears your prayers today. Turn to Him with sincerity, and He will answer you in ways you never imagined. And when you receive His blessings, let your heart laugh with gratitude, just as Sarah laughed with joy — for gratitude opens the doors to even greater blessings.
