Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Ya Waylata" (يَا وَيْلَتَى): An expression of astonishment and wonder, used when something extraordinary or unprecedented occurs. It literally means "Oh my calamity!" but here it conveys amazement, not grief.
- "Ba'li" (بَعْلِي): Means "my husband." In Arabic, "ba'l" refers to a woman's spouse.
- "Shaykhan" (شَيْخًا): An old man, advanced in years, indicating the husband had reached an age far beyond childbearing.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse narrates the moment when Sarah, the wife of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him), received the glad tidings from the angels that she would give birth to a son, Ishaq (Isaac). The angels had come to Ibrahim and his wife with this miraculous news, and upon hearing it, Sarah reacted with sheer astonishment.
She exclaimed: "Oh my! How can I bear a child when I am an old woman, and this husband of mine is an aged man?" At that time, Sarah was well past the age of childbearing, and her husband Ibrahim was also very old. From a purely human and natural perspective, the idea of conceiving a child under such circumstances seemed utterly impossible. She therefore described it as "a strange thing" — something that defied the normal course of nature and human experience.
However, her amazement was not a rejection of Allah's power or a denial of His ability. Rather, it was the natural reaction of a human being who knows the laws of nature and finds this event beyond the usual pattern. It was a wonder rooted in the ordinary, not a doubt in the Creator's might. Indeed, Allah is capable of all things, and His command is simply "Be," and it is. This event was a manifestation of Allah's absolute power, reminding us that nothing is impossible for Him, no matter how old, weak, or incapable the means may appear.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This beautiful scene teaches us a profound lesson: never limit Allah's power by our own understanding or circumstances. When Allah decrees a matter, no barrier — whether age, weakness, or impossibility — can stand in His way. Sarah's story is a living proof that divine mercy and blessings can arrive at the most unexpected moments, in ways we never imagined. So, dear believer, when your situation seems hopeless, when the doors appear closed, and when your own abilities fall short, remember that the Lord of Sarah and Ibrahim is still alive, still listening, and still able to turn the impossible into reality. Place your trust in Him, for His promise is true, and His mercy encompasses all things. Let this story fill your heart with hope and strengthen your certainty that with Allah, nothing is truly impossible.
