Surah Hud — Verse 98

The Tafsir (Explanation):

On the Day of Resurrection, Pharaoh — the tyrant who arrogantly rejected the call of Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) — will not merely enter the Hellfire alone. Rather, he will march at the forefront of his people, leading them like a shepherd driving his flock toward destruction. He will bring them directly into the blazing Fire, just as he had led them astray in this worldly life.

This verse paints a terrifying picture of misguided leadership: the one who was followed in falsehood will be followed into punishment. The Qur'an then delivers a devastating verdict: "And wretched is the arrival, the place they arrive at."

The Arabic word *wird* originally refers to the arrival at a watering place — a source of life and refreshment. But for Pharaoh and his followers, their "watering place" will be the opposite: a source of eternal torment. What a terrible destination! What a miserable end for those who chose to follow a tyrant rather than the truth brought by the messengers of Allah.

This is a profound lesson for every human being. It warns us to be careful whom we follow, for leaders bear the burden of their followers, and followers share the fate of their leaders. It also reminds us that the ultimate success is not in worldly power or wealth, but in obeying Allah and His messengers. The path of guidance leads to Paradise, while the path of arrogance and rejection leads to this wretched arrival.

Let this verse be a call to reflect: Are we following the footsteps of the righteous, who will lead us to the gardens of bliss? Or are we blindly following those who will lead us, like Pharaoh, to the Fire? Choose your leader wisely, for on that Day, everyone will be gathered with those they followed. May Allah protect us all from being among those who arrive at the Fire, and may He make us among those who are led to His mercy and eternal pleasure.
