Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ghāyābat al-jubb: The unseen depth or the very bottom of the well, where it disappears from sight. "Al-jubb" refers to a well that has not been lined with stone or built up—a natural pit in the earth.
- Yaltaqiṭhu: To pick up or take something without seeking it—meaning, someone would find him by chance.
- Al-sayyārah: The travelers or a passing caravan.
Tafsir (Explanation):
When the brothers of Yusuf (Joseph), peace be upon him, conspired to get rid of him out of jealousy and envy, one of them—moved by a remnant of mercy or perhaps by a more calculated cunning—spoke up to temper their murderous intent. He said: "Do not kill Yusuf. If you are truly determined to separate him from his father, then cast him into the dark, unseen depths of the well—a pit so deep that its bottom is hidden from the eye. There, a passing caravan of travelers will find him and take him away to a distant land. Thus, you will be rid of him without the heavy sin of bloodshed."
This speaker was not necessarily more righteous than the others; rather, he offered a plan that appeared less severe while still achieving their goal of removing Yusuf from their father's sight. He argued that killing him was an excessive and terrible act, and that abandoning him in the well would suffice—for the caravan would surely pick him up, and he would be gone from their lives forever.
This plan, though cruel, was part of Allah's divine design. The well was not the end of Yusuf's story; it was the beginning of a journey that would eventually lead him to a position of power in Egypt. Allah, in His infinite wisdom, used even the evil schemes of men to bring about His greater plan.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse teaches us profound lessons about the nature of envy and the limits of human scheming. The brothers of Yusuf allowed jealousy to consume them, yet even in their darkest plot, Allah's mercy was at work. The very well that was meant to be Yusuf's prison became the stepping stone to his elevation.
Dear reader, no matter how dire your circumstances may seem—even if you feel thrown into a dark pit by those who wish you harm—remember that Allah is the Best of Planners. What appears to be a calamity may be the very means by which Allah raises your rank. The Qur'an reminds us: "But perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah Knows, while you know not" (Al-Baqarah 216).
Trust in Allah's decree, for He turns the plots of the envious into pathways of success for the patient and the righteous. And beware of envy, for it blinded the brothers of a prophet to the bonds of kinship and led them to an act they would later deeply regret. Purify your heart from jealousy, for it is a fire that burns not only others but ultimately the one who harbors it.
