Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- لَنَاصِحُونَ (lanāṣiḥūn): Sincere well-wishers, those who genuinely desire good for someone and are committed to their welfare and protection.
Tafsir (Explanation):
After the brothers of Yusuf (Joseph) had secretly agreed among themselves to separate him from their father, they approached their father Ya‘qub (Jacob), peace be upon him, with words crafted to win his trust. They said: "O our father, why is it that you do not trust us with Yusuf?" They began by gently questioning his hesitation, as if to say: "What is it about us that makes you uneasy? Why do you not place him in our care?" Then they reassured him: "Indeed, we are truly sincere well-wishers for him." They meant that they would look after him, protect him from harm, and return him safely to his father.
Their words, however, were a mask. Beneath this sweet speech lay a hidden scheme, and their claim of sincere care was contradicted by what their hearts concealed. Yet their father, driven by love and the deep affection he held for Yusuf, sensed something unsettling—a feeling that would later prove true.
A Da‘wah Reflection:
This verse teaches us a profound lesson about the nature of human speech and the importance of discernment. How often do people use beautiful words to conceal ill intentions? The believer is called to be wise and perceptive, not naive, while also maintaining good character and not assuming the worst without cause. Notice how the brothers began with a question—"Why do you not trust us?"—a tactic to make their father feel unreasonable in his caution. This is a reminder that those with bad intentions often try to shift blame onto the innocent.
At the same time, the verse highlights the beauty of fatherly love. Ya‘qub’s caution was not born of suspicion without reason; it was a protective instinct placed by Allah in the hearts of parents. Islam honours this bond and encourages children to be truthful with their parents, for sincerity is the foundation of trust. And when trust is broken, as it was here, we learn that Allah’s plan prevails—and that patience, like that of Ya‘qub, is a key to divine relief. Let us strive to be people of genuine sincerity, whose words match their hearts, for Allah knows what is hidden in the breasts.
