Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Raawadathu (راوَدتّه): She sought to seduce him and tempt him to commit an immoral act.
- Ista'sama (استعصم): He firmly refused and protected himself from falling into sin.
- Al-Saaghireen (الصاغرين): The humiliated, disgraced, and degraded ones.
Tafsir (Explanation):
When the women of the city witnessed the overwhelming beauty of Yusuf (Joseph) and, in their astonishment, cut their own hands with the knives they were holding, the wife of the powerful minister (Zulaykha) seized the moment to make her confession public. She said to them: "So this is the one about whom you blamed me and criticized my feelings!" She was essentially saying: *Now you see with your own eyes why I was so captivated — you yourselves were utterly overwhelmed by his sight!*
Then she went further and revealed the full truth of her situation: "I did indeed try to seduce him and tempt him to surrender to me, but he remained chaste and firmly refused." She admitted her own guilt while acknowledging his purity — a powerful testimony to Yusuf's extraordinary character and unwavering faith.
Yet, despite her confession, her arrogance and desire did not subside. She then threatened him publicly: "If he does not do what I command him to do, he will surely be imprisoned and will be among the humiliated." This was not merely an empty threat — it was a declaration of her power and her determination to break his resistance, even if it meant destroying his freedom.
Reflection and Da'wah:
This verse reveals a profound truth about human nature and the test of faith. Yusuf (peace be upon him) stood alone against temptation, power, and social pressure — yet he chose Allah over everything. His chastity was not weakness; it was the highest form of strength. He understood that momentary pleasure could never outweigh eternal dignity in the sight of Allah.
Notice how Zulaykha's own admission — "I did try to seduce him, but he refused" — became an unintended testimony to Yusuf's righteousness. Even his enemies could not deny his purity. This is the beauty of integrity: when you remain steadfast upon the truth, Allah Himself causes even your adversaries to bear witness to your honor.
For every believer, this story is a beacon of hope. When you are faced with temptation — whether it is lust, wealth, status, or any worldly allure — remember that Yusuf chose prison over sin. And what was the outcome? Allah raised him to the highest ranks of honor in both this world and the Hereafter. Allah never abandons those who sacrifice for His sake. He replaces what they lose with something far better — in this life and in the next.
The lesson is clear: *Never trade your dignity before Allah for the approval of creation.* The prison of this world is temporary, but the disgrace of sin can follow you forever. Choose Allah, and He will choose for you what is best — even if you cannot see it at the moment.
