Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Asbu" (أَصْبُ): To incline, lean, or tilt toward something — derived from *al-sabwah* (الصبوة), which refers to the impulses and desires of youth.
- "Kaidahunna" (كَيْدَهُنَّ): Their cunning, scheming, or deceitful plotting.
- "Al-Jahileen" (الْجَاهِلِينَ): Those who act foolishly and ignorantly — not merely lacking knowledge, but those who disregard Allah's commands and prohibitions.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Here we witness one of the most profound moments of human vulnerability and divine reliance in the Qur'an. Prophet Yusuf (peace be upon him), a young man of extraordinary beauty and character, finds himself besieged by the persistent advances of the wife of a powerful Egyptian official. The women of the city had also begun to gossip and scheme against him, and the pressure was mounting from every direction.
In this moment of intense trial, Yusuf does not rely on his own strength or cleverness. Instead, he turns to his Lord with complete humility and sincerity. He declares: "My Lord, prison is more beloved to me than that to which they invite me." — meaning that he would rather endure the hardship, darkness, and humiliation of a prison cell than commit an act that would displease his Creator. This is a powerful lesson for every believer: the temporary suffering of this world, no matter how severe, is far better than the eternal consequences of sin and the displeasure of Allah.
Then Yusuf adds a supplication that reveals his profound awareness of human weakness: "And if You do not turn away their plan from me, I might incline toward them and be among the ignorant." He acknowledges that his own willpower alone is insufficient — he needs Allah's protection and guidance. This is not a lack of faith, but rather the highest form of faith: recognizing that all goodness comes from Allah, and that without His help, even the strongest among us can fall.
This verse teaches us several vital lessons:
- The believer must prioritize Allah's pleasure over all worldly comforts. Yusuf chose prison over sin — a choice that seems difficult but brings peace to the heart and honor in this life and the next.
- We must never be overconfident in our own ability to resist temptation. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us to constantly seek Allah's protection and to ask Him for steadfastness. Yusuf, despite his noble character, still turned to Allah for help — and so must we.
- Supplication is our greatest weapon. When faced with trials, the believer's first response should be to call upon Allah, just as Yusuf did. His prayer was answered, and Allah protected him and elevated his rank.
- Sin is described as ignorance. When Yusuf says "I would be among the ignorant," he teaches us that committing sin, even knowingly, stems from a form of spiritual blindness — a failure to see the consequences and the greatness of the One we disobey.
Dear reader, if you find yourself in a situation where temptation surrounds you, remember Yusuf's example. Turn to Allah with sincerity, ask Him to protect you, and trust that He will never abandon those who seek His help. The path of patience and righteousness may seem difficult at first, but its fruits are sweet — both in this world and in the Hereafter. Allah honors those who honor Him, and He never lets the efforts of the righteous go to waste.
