And I have followed the religion of my fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. And it was not for us to associate anything with Allah. That is from the favor of Allah upon us and upon the people, but most of the people are not grateful.

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Millah (مِلَّة): The religious path, creed, or way of life followed by a people.
  • Shirk (شِرْك): Associating partners with Allah in worship or attributing divine qualities to anything other than Him.
  • Fadl (فَضْل): Grace, bounty, or favor bestowed by Allah upon His creation.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, Prophet Yusuf (Joseph), peace be upon him, declares his unwavering commitment to the pure and pristine faith of his forefathers—Ibrahim (Abraham), Ishaq (Isaac), and Ya'qub (Jacob), peace be upon them all. He affirms that he follows their path, which is the path of absolute monotheism (Tawhid)—the sincere worship of Allah alone, without any partner, rival, or associate. This statement is not merely a personal preference; it is a profound declaration of identity, rooted in the legacy of prophethood and divine guidance.

Yusuf then emphasizes that it is inconceivable and utterly improper for him and his noble lineage—the family of prophets—to commit shirk, associating anything with Allah. This is because Allah, in His infinite wisdom and mercy, has purified His chosen messengers and their righteous descendants from such grave transgression. The very nature of prophethood demands absolute purity in belief and action.

He then attributes this blessing of monotheism and guidance entirely to the grace and favor of Allah. It is Allah who selected them, guided them, and honored them with this profound truth. Moreover, this favor extends not only to the prophets and their families but to all of humanity, for through them, Allah sent revelation and guidance to lead people out of darkness and into light. Yet, despite this immense and universal blessing, most people fail to show gratitude. They either neglect this gift, take it for granted, or outright reject it, turning instead to falsehood and ingratitude.

A Call to Reflection and Gratitude:

This verse carries a timeless message for every soul. The greatest blessing Allah has bestowed upon humanity is the gift of Tawhid—knowing Him, worshipping Him alone, and living a life in submission to His will. This is the very purpose of our existence. When we reflect on the state of the world, we see that many are preoccupied with fleeting pleasures, material gains, and distractions, while the most precious treasure—faith and closeness to the Creator—is left unappreciated.

As believers, we must strive to be among the grateful. Gratitude is not merely a word uttered by the tongue; it is a state of the heart that manifests in obedience to Allah, in using our limbs in ways that please Him, and in sharing this beautiful message with others. Let us cherish the gift of Islam, hold fast to the legacy of Ibrahim and his righteous descendants, and live our lives as living testimonies to the oneness of Allah. For indeed, the one who truly appreciates the favor of guidance is the one who walks firmly upon it, inviting others to its light with wisdom and compassion.

📜 Verse 36-40 — Yusuf

And there entered the prison with him two young men. One of them said, "Indeed, I have seen myself [in a dream] pressing wine." The other said, "Indeed, I have seen myself carrying upon my head [some] bread, from which the birds were eating. Inform us of its interpretation; indeed, we see you to be of those who do good."
He said, "You will not receive food that is provided to you except that I will inform you of its interpretation before it comes to you. That is from what my Lord has taught me. Indeed, I have left the religion of a people who do not believe in Allah, and they, in the Hereafter, are disbelievers.
And I have followed the religion of my fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. And it was not for us to associate anything with Allah. That is from the favor of Allah upon us and upon the people, but most of the people are not grateful.
O [my] two companions of prison, are separate lords better or Allah, the One, the Prevailing?
You worship not besides Him except [mere] names you have named them, you and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority. Legislation is not but for Allah. He has commanded that you worship not except Him. That is the correct religion, but most of the people do not know.
