Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Āmanukum – I entrust you with him / I place my trust in your protection of him.
  • Ḥāfiẓan – Guardian, Protector, One Who preserves and safeguards.
  • Arḥam al-Rāḥimīn – The Most Merciful of those who show mercy.

Tafsir (Explanation):

When the brothers of Yusuf (Joseph) came to their father Ya‘qub (Jacob), peace be upon him, asking him to send his youngest son, Binyamin (Benjamin), with them to Egypt, the father’s heart was heavy with the memory of what had happened to Yusuf years before. He had entrusted Yusuf to them, and they had returned without him, claiming that a wolf had devoured him — a claim that was false, as the blood-stained shirt with no tear had revealed. Now they asked for the same trust again, for the brother closest to Yusuf’s heart.

So Ya‘qub, peace be upon him, spoke with the wisdom of a father who had been burned once and would not be easily deceived again: "How can I entrust him to you except as I entrusted his brother to you before?" In other words: You gave me your word then, and you broke it. You promised to protect him, and you did not. What guarantee do I have now that you will not do the same with Binyamin? His words were not an accusation born of bitterness, but a natural caution from a heart that had tasted loss and did not wish to taste it again.

Yet, in the very same breath, Ya‘qub turned his reliance away from human promises and toward the Divine. He said: "But Allah is the best Guardian, and He is the Most Merciful of the merciful." This is a profound lesson for every believer: human beings may fail you, their promises may be broken, and their intentions may change — but Allah, the Exalted, never fails those who place their trust in Him. His protection is perfect, His mercy encompasses all, and His care for His servants surpasses the care of any parent for their child.

The father did not refuse his sons outright, nor did he humiliate them. Instead, he taught them — and us — where true security lies. He placed his hope in Allah’s mercy, asking that He protect Binyamin and return him safely, just as He had protected Yusuf in ways they could not yet see.

A Call to the Reader:

Dear believer, reflect on this beautiful example of trust in Allah. When people let you down, when their words prove hollow, do not despair — for Allah is the Guardian Who never sleeps, the Merciful Who never abandons. Turn to Him with a sincere heart, and He will protect what you love in ways you cannot imagine. Just as Ya‘qub’s patience and reliance on Allah were rewarded with the return of both his sons, so too will your trust in Allah be rewarded with His care and mercy. Let this verse be a reminder that the greatest security is not in the promises of men, but in the protection of the Lord of all worlds.

📜 Verse 62-66 — Yusuf

And [Joseph] said to his servants, "Put their merchandise into their saddlebags so they might recognize it when they have gone back to their people that perhaps they will [again] return."
So when they returned to their father, they said, "O our father, [further] measure has been denied to us, so send with us our brother [that] we will be given measure. And indeed, we will be his guardians."
He said, "Should I entrust you with him except [under coercion] as I entrusted you with his brother before? But Allah is the best guardian, and He is the most merciful of the merciful."
And when they opened their baggage, they found their merchandise returned to them. They said, "O our father, what [more] could we desire? This is our merchandise returned to us. And we will obtain supplies for our family and protect our brother and obtain an increase of a camel's load; that is an easy measurement."
[Jacob] said, "Never will I send him with you until you give me a promise by Allah that you will bring him [back] to me, unless you should be surrounded by enemies." And when they had given their promise, he said, "Allah, over what we say, is Witness."
