📖 English Meaning
So he began [the search] with their bags before the bag of his brother; then he extracted it from the bag of his brother. Thus did We plan for Joseph. He could not have taken his brother within the religion of the king except that Allah willed. We raise in degrees whom We will, but over every possessor of knowledge is one [more] knowing.

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

(Aw'iyatihim): Their bags or containers used for carrying provisions.
(Wi'a' akhih): The bag of his brother (Benjamin).
(Kidna): We planned, devised, and facilitated a scheme.
(Din al-Malik): The law and judicial system of the king of Egypt.
(Narfa'u darajat): We elevate in ranks and degrees.

Tafsir (Explanation):

The brothers returned to Yusuf (Joseph) after he had detained Benjamin on charges of theft, and he himself began the search of their belongings. He deliberately started with the bags of his other brothers before reaching Benjamin's bag, so that no suspicion would fall on him and the plan would remain concealed. Then, when he finally reached his brother's bag, he pulled out the king's drinking cup from it, exposing Benjamin as the "thief" in front of all.

This was not a random event—it was a divine arrangement. Allah had taught Yusuf this strategy and inspired him with it, for under the law of the king of Egypt, the punishment for theft was merely a fine or a beating, not enslavement. Had Yusuf applied that law, he could never have kept his brother with him. But Allah, in His infinite wisdom, made the brothers themselves declare their own law—that the punishment for theft among them was enslavement of the thief—and thus Yusuf was able to take his brother legally under their own code.

This is a profound lesson: Allah facilitates the affairs of His righteous servants in ways they could never have imagined. He elevates whom He wills in knowledge, wisdom, and rank, just as He elevated Yusuf. And above every person of knowledge, there is always one who knows more—until all knowledge culminates in Allah, the All-Knowing, who encompasses everything.

Da'wah Reflection:

O beloved reader! See how Allah turned a difficult situation into a victory for His prophet Yusuf. He did not abandon him in his trial; rather, He opened a door of wisdom and strategy that no human mind could have devised alone. This is the promise of Allah for those who remain patient and trust in Him—He will make a way out of every hardship and elevate them in ways they never expected.

And when you see a person of knowledge, remember that there is always someone more knowledgeable above them, and above all is Allah, the All-Knowing. So never become arrogant with what you know, and never despair of Allah's plan for you. Just as He planned for Yusuf, He plans for you—and His plan is always beautiful. Keep your heart connected to Him, and He will guide your steps, even through the darkest of trials.

📜 Verse 74-78 — Yusuf

The accusers said, "Then what would be its recompense if you should be liars?"
[The brothers] said, "Its recompense is that he in whose bag it is found - he [himself] will be its recompense. Thus do we recompense the wrongdoers."
They said, "If he steals - a brother of his has stolen before." But Joseph kept it within himself and did not reveal it to them. He said, "You are worse in position, and Allah is most knowing of what you describe."
They said, "O 'Azeez, indeed he has a father [who is] an old man, so take one of us in place of him. Indeed, we see you as a doer of good."
