Word Meanings:
- Rahl (رَحْلِهِ): The saddlebag or luggage of a traveler, where personal belongings are kept during a journey.
- Jazā’uhu (جَزَاؤُهُ): His recompense or punishment.
- Zālimīn (الظَّالِمِينَ): The wrongdoers, here referring to those who commit theft.
Explanation of the Verse:
When the brothers of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph) were confronted about the missing royal cup, they responded by stating the law that was practiced in their community and in the religion of their father, Prophet Ya‘qūb (Jacob). They said: "The punishment for the one who stole is that whoever is found with the stolen item in his luggage—he himself shall be given as a recompense." In other words, the thief would be handed over to the victim of the theft to serve as a slave for a period of time, as was the established legal ruling in their tradition. This was their way of saying that the one found with the cup would be taken as a slave by the owner of the cup.
They then added: "Thus do we recompense the wrongdoers," meaning that this is the just penalty for those who commit the crime of theft—they are enslaved by the one they wronged. This was not merely a personal opinion but a divine law revealed in the Shari‘ah of Prophet Ya‘qūb, which differed from the law of theft in other nations. In this way, they unknowingly set the stage for Yusuf to keep his brother Binyamin with him, as the cup was planted in Binyamin’s saddlebag, and the brothers themselves declared that the punishment for theft was enslavement.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This verse beautifully illustrates the wisdom and justice embedded in divine laws. The brothers, unaware of the divine plan, spoke the truth of their own law, and that very truth became the means by which Allah’s will was fulfilled. It reminds us that Allah’s justice is perfect and that His plans unfold in ways that are beyond human perception. As Muslims, we are taught that every ruling in Islam—whether regarding theft, honesty, or any matter—is rooted in wisdom and mercy. The punishment of theft in Islam, which includes the cutting of the hand under specific conditions, is not harshness but a protective measure for society, ensuring that people’s wealth and honor are safeguarded. Let this verse inspire you to trust in Allah’s justice and to reflect on how His laws, when followed sincerely, bring peace and balance to individuals and communities alike. Indeed, the Qur’an is a guide that leads us to the best of conduct and the most upright of paths.
