Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • ʿadhābī (My punishment): The painful retribution and chastisement that Allah inflicts upon those who persist in disbelief and sin.
  • al-ʿadhāb al-alīm (the painful punishment): The torment that is intensely agonizing and deeply distressing, affecting both body and soul.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this verse, Allah instructs His Prophet (peace be upon him) to convey a dual message to all of humanity: first, that Allah is the Most Forgiving and Most Merciful toward those who believe and repent sincerely; and second, that His punishment is truly the most excruciating and agonizing torment for those who refuse to turn back to Him. The word *alīm* emphasizes the severity and depth of this punishment—it is not merely discomfort, but a profound and unbearable suffering that awaits those who persist in wrongdoing and reject the call to repentance.

This verse comes as a powerful reminder that Allah’s mercy is vast and readily available, but so too is His justice. The door of repentance is always open, and whoever returns to Allah with a sincere heart will find Him forgiving and compassionate. However, those who deliberately choose to ignore His signs and continue in transgression should be fully aware that His punishment is unlike any other—it is the ultimate pain, both in this world and the Hereafter.

Da‘wah Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse is a beautiful invitation wrapped in a serious warning. Allah does not hide His mercy from you—He announces it openly, so that you may never despair of His forgiveness. At the same time, He honestly tells you of His punishment, so that you may not be deceived by your own delays in repentance. The choice is yours: run to the embrace of His mercy today, and you will find that He is more eager to forgive you than you are to ask. Do not let another moment pass without turning to Him—for His mercy is greater than your sins, and His love for your return is beyond what you can imagine. Come back to Him now, and taste the sweetness of His forgiveness before the day when His justice must take its course.

No fatigue will touch them therein, nor from it will they [ever] be removed.
[O Muhammad], inform My servants that it is I who am the Forgiving, the Merciful.
And that it is My punishment which is the painful punishment.
And inform them about the guests of Abraham,
When they entered upon him and said, "Peace." [Abraham] said, "Indeed, we are fearful of you."
