And when We substitute a verse in place of a verse - and Allah is most knowing of what He sends down - they say, "You, [O Muhammad], are but an inventor [of lies]." But most of them do not know.

Word Meanings:

  • Baddalnā (We substitute/replace): This refers to the abrogation (naskh) of one verse by another, where a divine ruling is replaced with a new one suited to a new circumstance.
  • Āyah (verse/sign): Here, it means a verse of the Qur’an containing a ruling or command.
  • Muf'tarin (fabricator/forger): One who invents lies and attributes them to God without basis.

Explanation of the Verse:

When We—out of Our infinite wisdom—replace one verse with another, abrogating an earlier ruling and substituting it with a new one that better serves the welfare of humanity at that time, and God knows perfectly what He sends down and what is most beneficial for His servants in every era, the disbelievers—who lack insight—immediately accuse you, O Muhammad, saying: "You are nothing but a fabricator, inventing this Qur’an yourself and attributing it to God!"

But this accusation is utterly false. The Prophet ﷺ never spoke from his own desire; the Qur’an is purely the revelation of God. The reality is that most of these people do not know the wisdom behind divine legislation. They do not understand that abrogation is not a contradiction or a flaw, but rather a mercy from God—a gradual refinement of laws suited to the growth of the early Muslim community, and a testament to the Qur’an’s living, dynamic guidance. Had they known the profound wisdom of God’s changing and replacing rulings, they would have submitted gratefully instead of rejecting arrogantly.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, ponder this: The One who revealed the Qur’an is the same One who created you and knows exactly what your soul needs at every stage of life. Just as a loving physician adjusts a prescription as a patient heals, so does the Lord of the Worlds refine His laws to guide humanity from darkness to light. This is not a sign of inconsistency—it is a sign of perfect, merciful design. So do not let ignorance blind you to the beauty of divine wisdom. Open your heart to the Qur’an, and you will find in its verses a light that never dims and a guidance that never fails. The disbelievers’ accusation stems from their lack of knowledge; but you—if you seek truth sincerely—will see that every word of this Book is a mercy and a healing for those who believe. Embrace it, and let it transform your life, for in it lies your success in this world and the next.

📜 Verse 99-103 — An-Nahl

Indeed, there is for him no authority over those who have believed and rely upon their Lord.
His authority is only over those who take him as an ally and those who through him associate others with Allah.
And when We substitute a verse in place of a verse - and Allah is most knowing of what He sends down - they say, "You, [O Muhammad], are but an inventor [of lies]." But most of them do not know.
Say, [O Muhammad], "The Pure Spirit has brought it down from your Lord in truth to make firm those who believe and as guidance and good tidings to the Muslims."
And We certainly know that they say, "It is only a human being who teaches the Prophet." The tongue of the one they refer to is foreign, and this Qur'an is [in] a clear Arabic language.
