Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Kashafa al-ḍurr (كَشَفَ الضُّرَّ): Removed the harm, affliction, or distress.
- Farīq (فَرِيقٌ): A group or party of people.
- Yushrikūn (يُشْرِكُونَ): They associate partners with Allah in worship.
Tafsir (Explanation):
After Allah has answered your supplications and removed the hardship, calamity, or illness that had befallen you, a group among you immediately turns to associating partners with their Lord — the very One who granted them relief and saved them from their distress. They begin to worship others alongside Him, offering devotion to idols, false deities, or created beings, as if the mercy they just experienced had come from multiple sources rather than from Allah alone.
This verse exposes a profound contradiction in human nature: when adversity strikes, people instinctively turn to Allah alone, crying out to Him in sincere supplication, acknowledging that no one else can remove their suffering. Yet the moment He answers their call and lifts the burden, some forget His favor and slip back into polytheism, attributing their salvation to other causes or continuing to worship false gods alongside the true Creator.
What ingratitude and baseness this reveals! The same tongue that begged Allah for relief now utters words of shirk. The same heart that recognized His sole power in times of need now divides its devotion between Him and His creation. This is not merely a historical observation — it is a timeless warning for every soul. How often do we remember Allah in hardship, promising to be grateful, only to forget Him when ease returns?
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and examine your own heart. When trials come, you call upon Allah with sincerity. But when He grants you relief — health after sickness, wealth after poverty, safety after fear — do you remain as devoted to Him as you were in your moment of need? True faith is not a fair-weather companion; it is a constant state of gratitude and worship, whether in ease or in hardship. Let this verse be a reminder to anchor your heart to Allah alone, so that your gratitude matches your supplication, and your worship remains pure for Him at all times. For the One who removes the harm is the only One worthy of your devotion — before, during, and after every trial.
