Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Af'idah (الأفئدة): The hearts/minds, which are the seat of understanding, reasoning, and discernment.
- La'allakum tashkurun (لَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ): So that you may be grateful, acknowledging the Giver of these gifts.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah, in His infinite mercy and wisdom, reminds humanity of the very beginning of their existence. He brought you out from the wombs of your mothers, at a time when you knew absolutely nothing—no language, no understanding, no awareness of the world around you. You were utterly helpless and dependent, yet Allah did not leave you in that state of ignorance. He granted you the faculties of hearing, sight, and hearts (minds) as tools for learning, perceiving, and comprehending. Through these gifts, you can hear His signs, see His creation, and reflect upon His greatness. The purpose of all this is not mere amusement or survival—it is so that you may recognize His favors, be grateful to Him, and worship Him alone with sincere devotion.
Every time you listen to the call of truth, every time you observe the wonders of the universe, and every time your heart ponders the meaning of existence, you are using the very gifts Allah gave you. Gratitude is not just a word on the tongue; it is the use of these blessings in ways that please the One who bestowed them. When you use your hearing to listen to the Qur'an, your sight to read His signs, and your mind to understand His guidance, you fulfill the very purpose of your creation. This is the path to true success—both in this life and the Hereafter.
Reflection and Call to Action:
Dear reader, pause and reflect: you did not create yourself, nor did you give yourself these abilities. They are pure gifts from Allah, given to you out of His love and mercy. So, let your heart overflow with gratitude, let your tongue praise Him, and let your limbs obey Him. The One who brought you from nothing and taught you everything deserves your worship and thanks. Do not let these blessings become a proof against you; rather, let them be a means of drawing closer to Him. Indeed, the most grateful of people are those who recognize the Giver behind every gift and turn to Him in humility and devotion.
