Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Musakhkharāt (مُسَخَّرَاتٍ): Subjugated, tamed, and made subservient — birds are compelled by Allah's will to fly in a manner suited to their nature.
- Jaww al-samā' (جَوِّ السَّمَاء): The open space between the sky and the earth — the vast expanse of the atmosphere.
- Mā yumsikuhunna (مَا يُمْسِكُهُنَّ): Nothing holds them (the birds) — meaning, nothing prevents them from falling except Allah Himself.
Explanation of the Verse:
Have the disbelievers not turned their eyes toward the birds, soaring in the open sky, suspended between heaven and earth? They are humbled and subjugated to Allah's command — He gave them wings perfectly suited for flight, taught them how to spread and fold them, and made the very air they glide through a means of their movement. Who is it that keeps them aloft, preventing them from crashing down at any moment? It is none other than Allah — the All-Powerful, the All-Wise — who created them with this extraordinary ability and sustains them in every heartbeat of their existence.
Reflect deeply on this scene: a tiny bird, lighter than a leaf, defies the pull of gravity and dances in the sky with perfect ease. It does not study aerodynamics, nor does it calculate wind currents — it simply obeys the instinct placed within it by its Creator. The One who holds the bird in the air is the same One who holds the heavens and the earth from falling into disorder. If He wills, the bird falls; if He wills, it soars. Nothing in this universe moves or rests except by His leave.
In this magnificent display of divine power, there are clear signs and profound lessons — but only for those who believe. Why specifically for the believers? Because they are the ones whose hearts are open to seeing beyond the physical. They look at a bird and see the Hand of Allah; they hear its chirping and remember His praise; they watch it fly and feel their own souls lifted toward their Lord. The disbelievers see only feathers and wind, but the believers see the Creator's mercy, wisdom, and absolute control over all things.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause for a moment the next time you see a bird in flight. Let it be a reminder that the same Allah who holds that delicate creature in the vast sky is holding you in His care. He who never forgets a sparrow will never forget you. If you place your trust in Him as the bird places its trust in His design, He will carry you through the storms of life with the same grace and ease. Open your heart to these signs, for they are not random — they are messages of love from your Creator, calling you to know Him, to believe in Him, and to find peace in His embrace.
